A stunning number lands in the middle of the gun debate
CNN ^ | Aug. 15, 2019 | Chris Cillizza

As political Washington mulls what -- if anything -- to do legislatively to address the latest in a long line of mass murders committed with guns, a new Fox News poll has a number in it that is an absolute stunner.

That number is 67%, which reflects respondents who told pollsters that they support a ban on assault weapons. For you non-math majors out there, that's two-thirds of the American public!

Yes, there is something of a partisan divide on the question -- with 86% of Democrats favoring a ban on automatic and semiautomatic weapons, while 46% of Republicans feel the same. But look at it another way: On a proposal that is widely regarded in GOP congressional circles as a non-starter because it is going too far in limiting guns, self-identified Republicans are split right down the middle -- 46% support, 46% oppose.

Among Republican women -- one of the key swing voting blocs heading into 2020, a majority (54%) support an assault weapons ban, while just 36% oppose it. And even a majority of people in gun-owning households (53%) support an assault weapons ban.

Polls like this are to shape public opinion, not measure it.

Whatever the polls say, they don’t outweigh the Constitution.

As soon as I saw CNN & Chris Cillizza I knew it was another bulldozer full of bovine excretion.

This is the kind of crapolla we could expect from Pravda in the 50s and 60s.

“That number is 67%, which reflects respondents who told pollsters that they support a ban on assault weapons. For you non-math majors out there, that’s two-thirds of the American public!”

Actually it’s probably real - the media has people scared to death right now that the next time they want to buy a can of soup that they’ll get shot up by some gun nut.

But what the Dems ALSO understand that votes are not flipped over the issue - if a Republican votes to keep long-guns legal, he won’t be punished. But MANY DEMOCRATS, if they vote for gun control, WILL lose their seats - it has happened over and over again in the recent past, which is why Hillary had to proclaim her love for the Second Amendment in 2016...as there are still 5 to 10 million gun owners who STILL vote Democrat.

Bottom line, being against gun control has NEVER been a losing issue for Republicans (or Democrats, for that matter), but being for gun control (in either party) puts your political future in grave risk (except for Democrats in very safe seats).

I’ll bet a national poll in 1855 supported slavery.

That is probably a safe bet!

Which would mean Jack Shitt to me. The Constitution does not grant us gun rights. It acknowledges our natural right to self defense - criminals, government, wild animals, doesn't matter. Amending the Constitution means only that a despotic government wants to curtail our natural rights. Duh.

I an sick of this notion of the left that the government grants us any rights. All the government does is restrict our rights.

It is pretty obvious to me that the left is indeed religious. They worship socialism and the government is their deity.

Another phony "poll".

Absolutely phony. I bet if they polled just gun owners, the poll would be upside down, with near-zero support of any bans. They only polled the non-gun owners, to get the results they wanted, which is not a reflection of the large populace that own guns in the USA.

... 86% of Democrats favoring a ban on automatic and semiautomatic weapons.

Automatics are already banned and 86% of respondents probably don't even know the difference.

Fake news. The American people will never give up their guns. If the GOP makes any move towards “gun control” AKA gun confiscation they will lose big time at the polls.

Biden says the previous ban, from 1994 to 2004 “worked.”

How so given during the ten year period there were 58 shootings at schools, including Columbine High School?

That’s on shootings at schools and doesn’t include other shootings at offices and elsewhere.

Make no mistake, their effort is to disarm the American citizen, one small step at a time.

Probably if asked what an assault weapon is you would get a 100 different answers most just parroting CNN or their local Democrat political hack! Assault weapon is a made up political term!

Automatics are already banned

They’re taxed, expensive due to supply and demand, the newest ones that are legal for civilians to own are more than 30 years old, and the paperwork is onerous to get one, but they’re not illegal. At least not in most states.
