President Reagan’s biggest mistake (arguably) was allowing congress to put so many mentally ill people on the streets.

I don't understand the history of that...what happened exactly?

Unfortunately I can’t give you a good answer. As best I can understand the democrat controlled congress thought it was unfair to keep non-violent mental patients locked up. The Reagan administration saw it as a chance to save money. So it was a done deal.

The ACLU sued the state when Reagan was Governor. So the state emptied the institutions and tried outpatient care. Which as we see has failed miserably.

I loved Reagan and I think the Reagan legacy is so important. I will admit no president is perfect and he was Rick Rolled by the a-hole DemRats and the gutless GOP especially in guns, mental health and immigration.

In the 1980s it was decided by Congress that state mental hospitals were inhumane so they were all closed. There was debate about the consequences, however even back then the dems owned the press.
