President Trump has floated dropping nuclear bombs into hurricanes to stop them from hitting the United States in meetings with Homeland Security and national security officials, Axios reported Sunday.
According to sources who have heard the president's private remarks and been briefed on a National Security Council memorandum, the suggestions were made during briefings on hurricanes.
"I got it. I got it. Why don't we nuke them?" Trump said at one such White House briefing, a source who was there told Axios.
"They start forming off the coast of Africa, as they're moving across the Atlantic, we drop a bomb inside the eye of the hurricane and it disrupts it. Why can't we do that?" the source added, paraphrasing the president's remarks.
The source told Axios that the briefer responded with something to the effect of "Sir, we'll look into that."
A 2017 NSC memo relayed to Axios reportedly describes a second conversation in which Trump asked whether the administration should bomb hurricanes to stop them from hitting the homeland.
A source briefed on the NSC memo noted that it does not contain the word "nuclear."
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Axios' report. A senior administration told Axios, "We don't comment on private discussions that the president may or may not have had with his national security team."
Another senior administration official told Axios, "His goal to keep a catastrophic hurricane from hitting the mainland is not bad. His objective is not bad."
The idea of using nuclear weapons to disrupt hurricanes has been floated before.
A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fact sheet about tropic cyclones address the concept and points out that it would be unlikely to work and most likely cause more harm than good.

LOL!!!!! LMAO!!!!
He thinks outside the box.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But there is nothing wrong with exploring all possibilities.
These anonymous sources of high level administration officials and others sounds like the same crew that assured us there was Russian Collusion.
I wonder if it would work?
Maybe not a nuke but a large-ish explosion - like a FAE (which sucks all the air out anyway.)
I heard that when they set off a FAE near the Afghanistan caves it would create such a vacuum it would suck everything right out of the caves. I would pay good money to see that, I bet it was hilarious.
Sure. More unnamed sources spouting unsubstantiated propaganda.
What a joke our “news” is.
I read a short story about this many years ago.
I asked the same thing on here once.
He asked and was likely told that it would potentially do more harm than good and that was that.
God forbid he asks a question that a normal schmo like me would ask.
He’s one of us even if he is rich.
No doubt he was discussing this while watching the Gorilla Channel!
The idea was proposed back in the sixties. If not earlier.
See post 8.
I don’t think I’m a stupid person and I’m not uneducated.
I’m just not afraid to ask what ifs.
Where’s the crime if he did ask this?
Pure unadulterated crap— anything to make Trump look bad.
Oh my! This would really support the climate change idiots.
GI Joe cartoon physics.
I don’t believe any media unnamed sources when the story is incredible to begin with. I noticed the memo actually did not have nuclear in it. So two years down the road someone remembered nuclear was in the conversation? Balderdash and pap.
DK
it was, is certainly worth asking...
some hurricanes do a great deal of damage
maybe disrupt the hurricanes with some other kind of bombs or?
while they’re still out over the high seas
I’m sure it has been looked into since 1945!
It isn’t the first time anybody has asked. It sounds great on paper, but it isn’t viable. The energy of a hurricane is the equivalent of hundreds of nukes.
They should figure out how to design the energy of a hurricane for our use.
