So BoJo wants protections and tariff's on incoming goods from the US to protect Britain's farmers, but wants the US to drop tariff's from China dumping in our markets?
Seems to me like BoJo should practice what he preaches.
Well he didn’t say exactly that. International politics is hypocrisy...
You overlook the obvious. Xi is not a dictaator.
He has others in the government seeking to implement their own agendas. That includes the military and various hard line old men.
The French case is interesting. In 1750 they were the European country with the largest population, largest economy and second largest area after Muscowy. They had an extensive empire as well.
Then they lost the first world war in 1756, yes I personally consider the seven years war as a true world war as it was fought in four continents and involved nearly every European power.
They got their revenge by creating an alliance against England and destroying the first British empire withe the creation of the USA.
But by 1815 they were a defeated country, one which had strengthened both the old rivals England and also created a new rival, a future Germany.
They replaced religion with an early form of communism and never really recovered
That it is. Double-speak and all.
I don’t know enough about China, either historically or currently. To me it seemed that Xi had consolidated power more than his predecessors after Deng, but that was information gleaned from the economist (I stopped subscribing to them in 2016 so know even less since then!!)
Mowbray’s pork pies are an institution in the UK. Fast food. They are about ok but look better than they taste. Worth trying.
Boris bringing it up is like an American president talking about Amerivan apple pie. The reference is to bring up home and comfort connotations
Temporary trade deal? Sure. We agree to reasonable terms for a limited period of time. There wont be too much objection from domestic lobbies because everybody understands its temporary - eg 24 months or something like that. The US Senate then ratifies the treaty with the necessary 2/3rds supermajority.
Since this is not a partisan issue in theUS and since Chuck Schumer has already indicated hed support something like this, it would pass the Senate with ease.
The consolidation of power occurred with out signifigant protest.
I have come to believe that the consolidation might have been a manuver to loosen the grip of the hardline communists reluctant to permit any change at all
Of course those who believe the consolidation was to slow the change might be right
“The question is whether the US is prepared to give the UK something and what we would have to give them in return.”
Presumably a statement by Mr. Johnson. Whether swapping cats-eye marbles or exporting pork pies, in a positive manner the statement strikes me as a fundamental mindset to trade. I’ll give you a Steely for a Red and a Blue.
Thanks for the explanation. So it would pass the Senate.
Would it need to go through parliament? I don’t really know.
But I guess it doesn’t - so then the temporary trade deal would work
“I have come to believe that the consolidation might have been a manuver to loosen the grip of the hardline communists reluctant to permit any change at all”
From what I had read (in one source - not qualified and not my opinion as I haven’t decided on it) - Xi reversed the dispersion that had been in place since Deng and has tried to make himself Mao 2.0 with all power flowing from him.
I didn’t know about the hardline communist bit - is that related to that “corruption purge” that happened at the start of Xi’s first term?
Well, I am not able to actually argue the point
