Own a rifle? Got a scope to go with it? The government might soon know who you are, where you live and how to reach you.
Thats because Apple and Google have been ordered by the U.S. government to hand over names, phone numbers and other identifying data of at least 10,000 users of a single gun scope app, Forbes has discovered. Its an unprecedented move: Never before has a case been disclosed in which American investigators demanded personal data of users of a single app from Apple and Google. And never has an order been made public where the feds have asked the Silicon Valley giants for info on so many thousands of people in one go.
According to a court order filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) on September 5, investigators want information on users of Obsidian 4, a tool used to control rifle scopes made by night-vision specialist American Technologies Network Corp. The app allows gun owners to get a live stream, take video and calibrate their gun scope from an Android or iPhone device. According to the Google Play page for Obsidian 4, it has more than 10,000 downloads. Apple doesnt provide download numbers, so its unclear how many iPhone owners have been swept up in this latest government data grab.

And is very likely the result of govt wanting to know who can fire at them from 200yds away at night.
With perfect accuracy.
Must be a good app.
This is what the Feds do when Trump is in office.
Put Bernie Sanders or Beto or any of the others in office and see what happens.
More pre-crime stuff, presumption of guilt.
I think about 50 million of us need to go out and download this app today.
FBI should make the most of their shoe leather.
This should have to hit the SCOTUS before Apple releases a single person’s information.
Apple and Google will release it right away, and without a fight.
That’s my take as well.
They’re anti-gun, so what’s so hard to figure on that one.
Not dinging you for the mention. You’re right.
Everyone should download it just to waste their time.
That was exactly my first thought too - and I have acted on it.
I now have the app even though I don't have the hardware to go along with it.
Screw these people!
I believed Ill do just that.

The police state agencies do whatever is in their personal interests and the interests of forces hostile to US citizens. It isn’t hard for them because of their totalitarian surveillance capabilities, money laundering and the ability to operate independently and in secrecy.
Trump has little control over them. Just look at barr and wray.
Another reason I don’t do “apps”.
We Are All Spartacus...
The people who gravitate to these offices do so because they like power. Snooping occurs to the extent that technology enables it. The legal impediments are a farce.
Getting it now.
Obviously someone was impressed.
Of course any IoT/Connected app has one simple flaw.
tech ping
It’ll get 5x worse.
Must be a good app.
