Florida Sens. Marco Rubio and Rick Scott on Wednesday asked President Trump to waive visa requirements for Bahamians affected by the shattering blow of Hurricane Dorian.
The Republican lawmakers sent Trump a letter outlining their reasoning, citing their state's proximity to and relationship with the Bahamas. They asked Trump to make it easier for citizens of the Bahamas to come to the United States to reside with relatives while they rebuild their lives.

While the Bahamians are basically good folks this would set a bad precident.
Unfortunately, President Trump has little choice but to bring them to the U.S. due to the optics of the situation.
They are part of the British Commonwealth, are an independent nation and still retain the Queen as their symbolic head of state. If Brexit fails, they will still be tied to the EU as well. They can do the bulk of the rebuilding,America doesn’t have to shoulder it all.

We can send aid and build temporary structures on the Islands and Nassau itself could shelter thousands; they don’t need to come here.

Yep....NO to refugee status for them in the US. They can stay in the Bahamas where they can work to help rebuild. What is being shown on American TV are the worst areas with the most devastation. Many areas do NOT have catastrophic destruction but merely repairable damage.
To the extent that they don’t already have it, the Bahamian government should pass AND ENFORCE stringent building codes. It’s amazing what good footers, foundations and code-compliant hurricane straps and tie downs can accomplish to hold buildings together.

Optics? Send some big ol’ C-17s down there to provide free transport to Canada. Send a hospital ship, and a few more ships and planes with food and water and generators and stuff.
