My opinion of the bumpstock ban is that it did more harm than good. It took a gadget, little more than a toy, and used it to blur the line between federally-defined Class III (fully automatic) firearms and semi-automatics. That sets the stage for legislation to expand the Class III definition, rather than moving it in the opposite direction (as *should* occur).

I'm not sure if that was the point you were trying to make, which is why I asked you for more information linking the bumpstock ban to the results that you mentioned.

Although I believe Trump to be a patriot at heart, he also has a big-city dweller's perspective on many things. Despite his residing in penthouses most of his life, he knows what occurs on the streets below - and he likes to burnish his "reaching out to the common man" credentials from time to time. I have no problem with that in most cases - but when the RKBA is the issue at hand, it makes me nervous.

“No. I don’t see the law enforcement going door to door,” O’Rourke said in response to a question at the New Hampshire Democratic Party Convention on Saturday.

“I see Americans complying with the law. I see us working with gun owners, non-gun owners, local, county, state, federal law enforcement to come up with the best possible solution. I have yet to meet an owner of an AR-15 who thinks it’s OK that we have these kind of mass killings in this country.”

Is he an idiot? If people don't comply with gun bans in some of the reddest states, what makes him think the rest of the country would be more likely to play along?

Connecticut Gun Owners Fail to Register; Officials Push “Amnesty”
Estimates on the number of guns subject to the legislation, meanwhile, indicate that there may be as many as 500,000. Based on those figures, analysts suggested that perhaps less than 10 percent — possibly even less than five percent — of the items subject to the draconian new gun-control regime were registered with authorities by the deadline.
...
“I’ve seen estimates of 1,000,000 firearm magazines that should have been registered under the law, but the state reports registering only 40,000 ... just 4 percent.”
...
“In California in 1990, out of an estimated 300,000 guns classified as ‘assault weapons’ just 7,000 were registered.”
[2.3%]

Massive noncompliance with SAFE Act
That data shows massive noncompliance with the assault weapon registration requirement. Based on an estimate from the National Shooting Sports Federation, about 1 million firearms in New York State meet the law’s assault-weapon criteria, but just 44,000 have been registered. That’s a compliance rate of about 4 percent. Capanna said that the high rate of noncompliance with the law could only be interpreted as a large-scale civil disobedience, given the high level of interest and concern about the law on the part of gun owners.
“It’s not that they aren’t aware of the law,” said Capanna. “The lack of registration is a massive act of civil disobedience by gun owners statewide.”
