Good article although Zimmerman was NOT the first guy to get it as bad as the Scottsboro Boys. That prize must surely go to Bernie Goetz. Maybe the author is too young to remember that one?

I remember it well. To be fair, Zimmerman's head was getting slammed by Martin when he pulled the trigger. Goetz went after one attacker when the imminent threat had passed - "You seem to be all right, here's another" Goetz told police he said to the attacker in his statement, though later he clarified that's what he THOUGHT but didn't verbalize it.

Nonetheless, Goetz was convicted only of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree. He walked on the murder and other serious charges.
