An update from the White House: Hogan Gidley tells me that just because WH legislative director Eric Ueland is among those pushing this on the Hill, it does NOT mean Trump himself has signed off on it. "Not even close." IOW this is A trial balloon to gauge the reaction from Pres. Trump's base.

Trump doesn't need any trial balloons to 'gauge reaction from his base'.
President Trump knows that any laws that lead to a 'national gun registry' is DOA with his base and with any thinking American that wants to be safe from tyranny.

My response: Deal Breaker
Any proposal that leads to universal recordkeeping, which is necessary to the creation of a national registry, is a deal breaker. I will not support any policy or any politician who facilitates the creation of a national registry, because I firmly believe that will mean the end of the United States as a free country.

Really? If the president doesn’t know what his base thinks about this and needs a trial balloon than he’s pretty tone deaf. Here’s a more likely explanation: he’s seeing just what he can get away with.
