The Ridiculous Anti-Vaping Crusade
The National Review ^ | September 20, 2019 | RICH LOWRY

Posted on 09/21/2019 8:50:09 AM PDT by kingu

Never before has a boon to public health been met with such hysteria and ingratitude.

Vaping is almost all upside in comparison with traditional smoking, a wanton destroyer of health and lives, and yet the nation is in the grip of a panic about e-cigarettes.

In a rarity for the Trump era, the anti-vaping sentiment jumps traditional geographic and political bounds, running from the Oval Office to San Francisco, from President Donald Trump to his most fervent enemies.

Trump announced a Food and Drug Administration ban on flavored e-cigarettes last week, while not too long ago the San Francisco Board of Supervisors banned the sale of vaping products at retail outlets and — seemingly more persnickety about this than, say, the use of heroin or public defecation — prohibited their delivery to addresses in the city.

It's really telling that you can, under SF's new law, have gummy bear flavored THC vape pens delivered to your home, but any other product, with or without nicotine, is banned.

Even more entertaining is the concept to ban flavors - teen smoking is down to 6% in the latest surveys, the lowest it's ever been. But let's panic about vaping by banning anything but cigarette flavored liquids. What's next, curing teen drinking by only permitting beer flavored sodas?

And let's be clear here. 2/3rds of smokers who try to quit smoking using vape products are successful in their first attempt.

Without any exceptions whatsoever, the antivaping crowd is also the pro cigarette crowd and they don’t care how many people die from cigarettes that wouldn’t die with vaping as a tool to stop smoking.

That is who and what they are and it becomes manifestly clear when you debate them.

My 62 year old sister has such a severe case of COPD that she has lost nearly 100 lbs. in a year, thanks to vaping as a substitute for smoking. She looks like she’s 82, and I don’t know how much longer she has. She is so weak she can barely fix meals and has no family nearby to help.
Vaping is worse than smoking. My sister is proof.

Is this the kind of nonsense that grinds Rich Lowry’s gears? It’s no wonder he has put the NRO in the crapper.

I saw a guy smoking an e-cig recently and the cloud he exhaled was the size of a VW Beetle.

People don’t have a problem with it being an aid for smokers to stop smoking.

The problem is people who have never smoked before in their lives are starting to vape. And the fear is that this will be a gateway to more dangerous habits since these vape products contain nicotine. This is especially problematic for children. A recent study showed over 1/4th of high school students are vaping regularly.

I don’t smoke anything or vape anything but I know BS hysteria when I see it (remember OMG Second Hand Smoke), and I’m really sad Trump doesn’t see it in this case.

This anti-vaping hysteria has ManBearPig written all over it.

Kinda like how the pro-pot crowd is often the anti-tobacco crowd ... of course since tobacco smoke can apparently subdue a pot buzz according to one study I once read about (out of California, naturally) the stoners might have a reason.

I’m really sad Trump is just another Arbitrary government loving FDR follower rather than a proponent and protector of the Constitution.

But at least he’s strongly pro-life.

Vaping has turned thousands of kids into addicts who can’t quit. They will become addicted adults who can’t quit.

STOP TURNING CHILDREN INTO ADDICTS.

Far more than that believe leftist propagandists and are being trained to send white people to the ovens.

Priorities, people, please.

No icky stick slaves for you!

Teens are gonna smoke, or vape. It's a fact of life. If they vape they're not gonna suck death sticks. Bad for RJR and friends!

“...the antivaping crowd is also the pro cigarette crowd ..”

It is? The antivaping crowd is basically the anti everything that someone else might enjoy crowd ...ESPECIALLY tobacco. Show them the product and they will ban it. Totally anti freedom of personal choice.

I'm not saying that there are no dangers associated with vaping, but right from the start it was in the left's crosshairs, and I always wondered why vaping was targeted with such intensity at a time when the left - and even many conservatives - are touting the widespread legalization of marijuana.

There are probably a dozing marijuana shops within 15 minutes of my house; meanwhile drug-fueled homelessness is sprouting up everywhere. Say what you will about the alleged safety of marijuana, it is still an entry-level drug and a psychologically dangerous trigger for some people.

I don't know enough about vaping to know what sorts of substances can be put into those tubes, whether they are a modernized form of a "bong," or whether only commercially-made products can be used with them.

Newt Gingrich (1997) didn't mention nicotine addiction but today he might:

Civilization cannot survive with twelve-year-olds having babies, fifteen-year-olds shooting one another, seventeen-year-olds dying of AIDS, and eighteen-year-olds graduating with diplomas they cannot read.

Society, that's us, must stop this youth addiction.

Ironically Juul Labs may have become its own worst enemy.

About six months ago they began airing commercials every hour on our conservative talk radio station urging a nationwide age 21 purchase law to combat “youth vaping”.

They may have started the hysteria.

A recent study showed over 1/4th of high school students are vaping regularly.

They tried a vape product in the last 30 days is what the study found (24%) 'Regular use' of at least once a day is about 8% vs 6% smoking cigarettes. Interestingly, there's no result pairing the two data points - I'd very much like to know how much of the 6% smoking cigarettes (or other tobacco products) also are part of the 8% who have used a vaping product at least once a day.

1/3 of high school students also tried an alcoholic drink in the last 30 days. Obviously we need to ban alcohol...

As for it being a gateway - please tell me how someone goes from pickle flavored vaping to smoking? Oh, but I could see an easier path if people are vaping ash tray flavored liquids (the result of banning flavors...)

Oh freaking spare me! If it were true all of Obamas EO’s would be law! He has done far more than Reagan in less time with more obstruction against him. And your pissing in the wind over vapping? Missed the part about vapping in the Constitution. In case you haven’t noticed, you still can do it. But we Got bigger issue homs if you just woke up. Just curious, Name me that one perfect President from your lifetime?
