Joker: Joaquin Phoenix walks out of interview after controversial question about real-life violence

Phoenix was asked by The Telegraph if he thought particular moments in the film "might perversely end up inspiring exactly the kind of people it's about, with potentially tragic results". Instead of answering, the actor walked out.

The debate over violence in film has been prevalent in recent months following a series of mass shootings in the US. Last month, Universal pulled the release of new thriller The Hunt, a film following 12 red-state strangers who wake up in a clearing and realise they’re being hunted by liberals.

Yep, good for Joaquin! Never indulge the press in their sick fantasies.
If any media form is responsible for violence in society it’s the press.

It was an accidental overdose MONTHS later while he was filming a different, and actually quite happy, movie.

Ledger didn’t commit suicide, he overdosed on dope. I feel bad for his family but not nearly as bad as I do for the lady down the street fighting cancer. Ultimately it was his own stupidity of messing with that stuff that cost him his life.

Personal responsibility seems to be going by the wayside in the U.S. nowadays. It’s never the person that commits some bad action’s fault, there’s always an excuse for it. It’s never someone’s fault he took too much dope, it’s the gun’s fault some jackass killed innocents, a movie triggered someone and they committed mass murder, etc. If we continue to deflect blame from where it belongs then we’re going to end up living in a sterile society where no one can say anything, make a movie, write a song, or enjoy any activity for fear that some weak minded individual will be inspired to commit acts of violence because of it.

Probably trying to numb the guilt over kissing a man in Brokeback Mountain. Sad he wrecked his life that way

Is this the fourth Joker movie within a 12 year span?
I won’t be seeing it, but apparently there’s still a market for even more Joker.
The Penguin and Riddler are less complex characters.

In the liberal social media world there is a terms called “influencers”.
People that merely based on their actions make others mimic them.

Nonsense! This crap is a work of art! Like having the Mona Lisa inspeire shootings. Works of art never ever spark violence....oh and neither do video games.

However Red hats and Trump 2020 T-Shirts invoke all sorts of violence.

“I believe his death was attributed to
an accidental overdose of medications. “.........From what I understand, he had finished Brokeback Mountain and then did The Dark Knight, and afterwards was experiencing difficulty sleeping, hence the drug and alcohol combination which led to his unfortunate and untimely demise.

"Really ... Correction: another dead junkie!"

Yep. According to Wikipedia:
".. oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam (aka Vallium)
temazepam (aka Restoril -- sleeping med), alprazolam
(aka Xanax), doxylamine (antihistamine & "short-term
sedative & hypnotic sleep-aid")" were all found in his body. The conclusion was an accidental overdose.

A polite way of implying he was a abusing meds
since there's no proof he was deliberately
and consciously doing so.

But it definitely looks like he was
strung out on prescription drugs.

“Remember all the copycat violence prompted by Jack Nicholson? (Crickets)”

In 1989 people were still able to separate fantasy and reality. I don’t think thats true any longer.

I think the question is legitimate, espesially since the Joker has alread inspired a mass shooting. And as I watched the trailers, the thought did come to me that the man who becomes the Joker is possibly being portrayed too sympathetically. But early reviews have already addresded this question for me. One said that while you can sympathise with the character, he neveragreed with his later violent acts.

Please cite articles that debunk “influencer” impact on getting people to act.

As an online marketer I’d LOVE to read of this debunking.

Thank you.

Any one else that can debunk the influence media has on getting people to act, please do so.

LMAO.

So you feel that people can be influenced to act.

But just Conservative influences.

Not your left wing sources.

Troll.

“We certainly didn’t see interviews like this when Silence of the Lambs came out.”

The violence / cannibalism was referenced in dialogue, but we never saw a lot of blood & gore onscreen in Silence.

OTOH, we have seen an exponential increase in men wanting to put on woman suits, so there’s that.

Workers comp and other case managers deal with clients who are bi-polar and/or experiencing major depression often-and suicidal thoughts/ideation are not uncommon. Right after Heath Ledger’s death, he was mentioned in a couple of psychology publications-apparently, he had been bi-polar for some years, exhibiting manic behavior, sleeplessness, deep depression and suicidal thoughts-he was prescribed antidepressants and other meds-probably too many meds.

He was in inpatient psychiatric facilities a couple of times, once after a suicide attempt after his fiance had left, taking their baby with her. His behavior became concerning to his therapist and others, but he had refused to go into inpatient therapy again. He really should have been committed right then, but that is hard to do to an adult who doesn’t look/sound dangerous to anyone...

I think he committed suicide, based on his having talked about/tried it in the past. He was a mentally ill young man who was given drugs to mellow him out instead of being committed to a facility for 6 months or so where he might have really been helped-it is a shame that someone dies as a result of mental illness, no matter their age...
