28-year-old to leave Alberta Hospital in Edmonton 'unsupervised' for outings

A review board has ruled that a mentally ill man found not criminally responsible after killing five young people in Calgary in 2014 can be eased back into the community.

With prior approval, Matthew de Grood will be able to leave Alberta Hospital in Edmonton unsupervised for outings. With added supervision, he can spend up to three days in the city.

The Alberta Review Board has also decided de Grood, 28, will be able to travel within Alberta for up to a week, as long as the trip has been OK'd and he is with a responsible adult.

It also says de Grood could possibly take up residence in a 24-hour supervised group home in Edmonton.

The psychiatrist in charge of de Grood's medical treatment said the man's risk of reoffending is low.

But Dr. Santoch Rai also told the Alberta Review Board that if de Grood were to commit another offence, it would be severe.

I suspect the soon-to-be-released mentally ill killer will NOT be moving in next door to the “good” doctor. Just a hunch.

The justice system is crazy across the board. Albertans are pissed.

this is great... not criminally responsible... how about criminally responsible because of his mental state...

parole boards should house everyone they release for a week...

At least we know who the first person to die will be during his next rampage...

Holy COW!

This might also present an opportunity for a grieving parent...

Insanity: it’s a liberal thing. Then they put the inmates in charge of the asylum, and empty the asylums so they can walk among us (and vote for more craziness.)

The mental illness excuse for crime needs to severely curtailed.

Well, note the timing on this. The link RightGeek posted included this little nugget:
“According to his lawyer, Allan Fay, he intentionally killed the five victims, but believed they were werewolves and vampires who threatened his life.”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Calgary_stabbing
(So, perhaps this is some sort of cultural nod where the Review Board thinks every October LOTS of people think others out in society are also “werewolves and vampires” and so, maybe he’s not so mentally unfit, after all. Eh?)

I knew this guy’s father, a Calgary cop. Good man, one of the nicest cops I knew when I worked with Calgary police (I was only in PR).
I can’t imagine what he and his wife have gone through.

Still, doesn’t change the facts of the case. I just feel for the parents.
But, yeah, the kid should be off the streets.

Insanity in whatever form should be reason for deferral of punishment, not a defense of a capital crime. Just sayin.

Interesting that no one has bothered to update the status of the case on Wikipedia.

It usually takes only seconds to report the death of a famous person on Wikipedia.

If someone like that were to settle anywhere near *me* I'd make sure that he had a fatal accident soon after arrival. You can't be too careful these days.

I liked the old “Judge Dee” books about the Tang dynasty judge.
If you were wrong and let a killer go who then goes on to commit a crime, you suffer the same fate.

Believe that fellow spent one or a couple of years or so in a jail in the United States (presumably in New York State). Then he got shipped back to Canada where he eventually drifted back to my locale (and that of course got some attention) and basically lived on some disability pension or welfare until he passed away about two or three years ago.

Among the things about that very sad and senseless episode that I sometimes think about is that here we had this mentally ill person do the horrible thing he did and that gave the talking people another reason to lecture to us about the need for more gun control (specifically then Justice Minister Allan Rock’s proposal for a long gun registry). He continues to be passed on and let free by the authorities afterwards to commit yet another violent act. It seems that mentally ill people can not be held responsible for or supervised by the authorities over their actions, yet we are expected to compensate for all of that with more incoherent and ineffective laws on the law abiding.
