I was in Mexico waiting for my guide to get off from his day job. Across the street was a crowd waiting in front of a large building. I watched them for a while confused as to what they were doing, which was just waiting. When my guide arrived I asked him what they were waiting for. He said, that is the free hospital. Waits are very long. In the summer when it hits 120 degrees they send out gurneys every hour to collect the dead.
Turns out there are two levels of “free” health care. There is the care for the regular people, which I saw, and a much larger hospital with no lines for the more elite people such as politicians and government workers. The wealthy, he said, went to America for care.
I talked to someone in my guide’s family who had an operation on his neck in the “élite” hospital. It had been two years before and he was just getting back to work. I can’t recall the details now, but a nurse I spoke to in the states told me what I described was how the operation was done in the 1950’s.
Yeah, every time I see a Bernie bumper sticker on a Tesla or BMW, I’m tempted to tell the driver, “You know, you’ll have to forfeit that car to the state to help fund Mr. Sanders’ health care Utopia - but I’m sure as long as you remain committed to furthering the Revolution your new commune leader will let you borrow the community Prius on alternate Thursdays.” :)
