The CEO of Dick's Sporting Goods said the company destroyed more than $5 million worth of assault-style rifles following its decision to stop selling the weapons amid pressure on retailers from gun control groups.
Ed Stack told CBS News during an interview that aired Sunday that the millions of dollars worth of inventory was turned into scrap metal.
"I said, 'You know what? If we really think these things should be off the street, we need to destroy them,'" he said.
It was not clear how much destroying the weapons cost the sporting goods giant.
Stack announced the Coraopolis, Pennsylvania-based chain would stop selling assault-style rifles and high-capacity magazines following the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. The shooter killed 17 students and school staff with a weapon purchased from a Dick's location.
"We found out that we sold this kid a shotgun," Stack said. "That's when I said, 'We're done.'"

I don’t think this is just an isolated leftist amongst a conservative Board. Leftists are like muslims in that once they have numbers they get cocky and let it all hang out. I suspect Dick’s management and perhaps its Board has a number of tree-hugging leftists which empowered this guy to do what he did.
They were not on the street. They were in stockrooms. They were destined for the hands of honest, non-violent citizens.

Just braying to their crowd. We have Cabela’s and Outdoor Sportsman’s Warehouse plus a few smaller independent dealers. There are seventeen of their stores in WA., with nine in the Seattle vicinity. They destroyed far more than $5M when they destroyed those rifles. They permanently alienated millions of former customers that day. I will never again set foot in Dick’s.
Good going, DICK. That means that you funded the gun companies $5M which they will use to produce more guns for customers that will not go into your store.

We walked through their store the other day just to see how the enemy operates. The store was empty for a Saturday afternoon.
As a consumer with broad interests, hunting and self defense are in the top 3 for us. While shopping for ammo we might have been interested in some exercise equipment or a GPS. But we won’t buy from Dicks since there are plenty of other, better, stores. Their loss.
Based on my observations that Saturday afternoon, I predict that Dicks will go out of business like many of the other sporting goods places that Dicks replaced. Good riddance.
I cannot wait to never shop at their store again.
