Trump joins Twitch platform
The Hill ^ | 10/11/19 | Rachel Frazin

President Trump recently joined the video streaming platform Twitch, live-streaming his Thursday night rally on the Amazon-owned site.

Presidential contenders and politicians have been using the platform over the past several months, live-streaming Q&As and informal conversations to audiences of tens of thousands.

Trump's Twitch account had nearly 47,000 followers as of Friday morning. The page indicates that his Minneapolis rally had more than 40,000 views as of Friday, and that his campaign plans to broadcast his rally next week in Dallas.

Trump also plans to hold a rally in Louisiana later on Friday.

The president is known for his prolific Twitter presence, but his aides have signaled in recent months that the president is looking to gain a foothold on other platforms as well.

The Trump campaign advertised heavily in social media platforms such as Facebook in 2016, a strategy it has continued into the 2020 race.

The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to The Hill's request for comment on joining Twitch.

Trump is not the first presidential candidate to join the platform, which is popular among the gamer community but has niches for many interests, including politics. Democratic candidates Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and entrepreneur Andrew Yang are also on Twitch.

This is encouraging to see.

Past Republicans gave short shrift to social media and had their clocks cleaned. Trump is cutting edge.

Also, his 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale is very sharp and is quickly establishing a huge footprint for Trump in social media (not just Twitter), bringing Trump to a younger audience.

Well, its not like Twitch is any less libtard than Twitter. I’d like to see Trump give some actual alternative platforms some love although it obviously doesn’t have to be exclusive.

What you advocate is retreating to a "safe space" and preaching to the choir. We need to win converts - hearts and minds.

So the "libtard" platforms is exactly where Trump needs to go. And Brad Parscale knows this.

No, Trump can still use libtard monopoly platforms but at the same time he should also highlight and be on alternatives like Gab and Bitchute. Its not like he’s ever going to get a fair shake on the former.

Again, there are no converts to be won on those sites. People on Gab are going to vote for Trump whether or not he keeps a profile there.

We need to think strategically. There are far more votes to be won on Twitter, Facebook, etc. Much more upside there.

The goal to being on those sites isn’t to convert, its to raise awareness so that we can break the monopoly. The strategy of the dominant social media platforms is to shutdown the accounts of allied conservatives and harass and manipulate the analytics of the big conservative accounts they can’t outright shut down to slow down their momentum. As long as they maintain their monopoly, they have the power to continue to do this. There is no reason why Trump can’t be on places like Gab and Twitter at the same time and give occasional shoutouts. Its not like he’s manually signing up himself.

I totally agree which is why we need to be there.

If Trump was to vacate these "dominant social media platforms" in some kind of show of protest, as I have seen advocated here (not necessarily by you), trust me, the liberals would be high-fiving each other all across America and celebrating.

It irritates the libs at Twitter to no end that Trump maintains 65,500,000 followers (and growing) on THEIR platform. I love it that we are disrupting their world and making it very difficult for them to shut conservatives down.

Don't get me wrong, the war is far from won. I see all the suppression out there of conservatives and the suspensions of conservative accounts and what not while the other side does far worse with no repercussions.

I don't think the answer is building out "conservative" platforms as an alternative. There is no way that platforms like GAB and Parler are going to pose any kind of threat to Facebook, Google and Twitter anytime soon (if ever) and even a well-funded start-up will take a good five years to challenge the big platforms. And we just don't have that kind of time with the pivotal 2020 election just months away.

We need to take the fight to them on their platforms.

I agree. Trump needs to fight in the mass market public square and win converts. Snowflakes retreat to safe places.

Why do people keep saying I’m advocating retreat? I said no such thing. Boosting a competitor is an offensive move. Giving up and helping the Bay Area Megacorps to keep their monopoly is the narrowminded option He can still be on Twitter. I repeat he can still be on places like Twitter. Do you understand?
