Impeachment is fundamentally political. As long as Trump commands the unwavering loyalty of a super-majority in the GOP he is probably safe. I do expect a handful of senators from swing states may break ranks, but not enough to pose a serious threat of actual removal. To remove him you’d need at least twenty defections. At the moment I don’t see where they are going to get that many.

But... an impeachment trial is dangerous. If public opinion shifts drastically against Trump and especially if his hold on the GOP faithful in the more reliably Republican states weakens, then all bets are off.
