Denmark's decision to approve the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, designed by Moscow to bypass Ukraine, strengthens Russia and weakens Europe, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Thursday.

Ukraine's fragile economy is at risk of losing billions of dollars in transit fees if Moscow deprives it of Russian gas transit to Europe. Russia and Ukraine, which have been at loggerheads since Moscow annexed Crimea in 2014.

Moscow is building new pipelines to Europe, such as Nord Stream 2 and TurkStream, to bypass Ukraine, which is now a major route for Europe's Russian gas supplies. Following the completion of the new pipelines, Russian gas transit via Ukraine will shrink to a trickle.

On Wednesday, Denmark gave its approval for the construction of Nord Stream 2 in a crucial boost for the pipeline, welcomed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

I have a lot of sympathy for the Ukrainians but, as I understand it, Russia was faced with a situation where Russia piped into Ukraine a certain amount of gas to be transited through Ukraine to Europe. A very significant amount less than 100% of that gas actually got through to Western Europe. These new pipelines are the Russians; efforts to deal with that thievery. I can’t blame them.

That and extortrinate transit fees. Headline is a coded message to Democrats: do something about it or we’d have nothing to pay your kids on boards with anymore.

“Transit fees” through moslem territory was the major impetus for the voyage of Columbus.

Here it is the same think. Puts the lie to charges that Russia is using gas trade to take Ukraine under control.

Ukraine made its bed when they rejected a very generous economic package from Russia in 2013 and at the behest of Western powers, overthrew their duly elected President instead.

The fact that Western Europe is now actively pursuing alternatives to Ukraine transit for their energy needs and Ukraine itself is forced to import LNG from the United States at inflated prices should really come as no surprise. This is how neo-liberal interventionists operate.
