Voters elected John Bel Edwards to a second term as Louisiana’s governor in a General Election held Saturday, Nov. 16, according to projections by WAFB Political Analyst Jim Engster. Edwards was first elected in 2015, breaking through an eight-year lockout of Democratic governors across the Deep South.

... With a clear challenger for Edwards, President Trump and other prominent Republicans rallied behind Rispone. But, Edwards used President Trump’s backing of Rispone to his own advantage, increasing his support among minority voters.

Edwards is expected to make his victory speech shortly.

Well, I guess the voters down there are hard pressed to gain any value from looking how bad other areas are that are run by Democrat leaders.

California anyone...

Why dems keep winning boggles the mind. Testing cheating for 2020?

Rispone is a 70-year-old businessman with a background in construction, and is a first-time candidate. A longtime donor, he spent millions of dollars of his own money on his campaign. He bills himself as a "conservative outsider," and is an ardent Trump supporter. He has campaigned on banning sanctuary cities and cracking down on illegal immigration, and is a vocal critic of the ongoing impeachment inquiry.

Edwards ran as pro-gun and anti-abortion candidate. Are other Democrats gonna adopt these beliefs to win future elections? Democrats can’t run as who they really are, they have to pretend to be Republican to win in the South and Flyover States. This really has to cause them some concern for 2020 Presidential and down ballots.

Being a native of the state, I have some insights from family still living there. This was NOT a referendum on Trump, despite what anyone will hear from the media in the coming days/weeks. In the primary, there were two republicans running. Abraham, a doctor, was favored by MANY die-hard social conservatives. Rispone was not, as I understand it, as conservative.

Bel Edwards has run as a blue dog, so yes, miles apart from CA and Pelosi and what is happening on the Federal level. He has raised taxes (don’t they always?) and turned around and gave the money to the Teachers as a raise. Since there are many minorities in LA and especially as teachers, the outcome is somewhat predictable. Had Abraham run against Bel Edwards, it might have been different. In any case, BE had a harder road to climb this time and a quick look at the map will show more red across the state than blue. It remains to be seen what his popularity will be going forward, but I wouldn’t bet the farm on it staying high.

Bel Edwards is very conservative even more so than some GOP. He gets on well with Trump. He could switch parties like the gov in WVA did who was a Dem and switched to GOP.

This is now 2 for 2, whereby in Kentucky, Bevin lost by a nose, while all the other positions (nearly) went full-on Republican with big margins.

Now the same pattern in Louisiana.

I just do not believe that both Gov races lost by a hair to the Dems, while all the rest (nearly) went to the Republicans with significant margins.

Something is rotten.

WTF HELL!!!! Maybe people don’t really care and the GOP is absolutely f-ing worthless!!!! These are looked at as small losses by us and great victories by them. We do not understand political war and how the left is killing us. I would simply say demographics again is key to the shrinking USA.

Thanks for the mention.

Sounds good on those two points.

Wonder what his take is on the Transgender nonsense sweeping the nation.

“This really has to cause them some concern for 2020 Presidential and down ballots.”

The winning margin was not that great, and you have to factor in the corruption in New Orleans and the fact that Rispone did not campaign very hard at all.

Edwards campaign mostly ran old ads of Abraham and Rispone attacking each other in the primary. That is the way Edwards won his first term — using ads of Republicans attacking Vitter. Also, some Republicans endorsed Edwards the first time. He bought them off.

+10 this is exactly what I was saying about him. He should switch to GOP like the gov of WVA did who beat a similar candidate like Rispone. Bel Edwards is hated in the national Democrat party.

Thanks for the mention. You’re the second to mention his sort of thing. Great.

So the voters are looking at the policies, and agreeing.

Can’t argue with that as long as they are sound.

“Being a native of the state, I have some insights from family still living there.”

I don’t remember the issue, maybe something to do with guns or abortion, but people here were shocked to see a Democrat on our side, on that issue. So I tend to agree with you...he knew how to govern to win as a Democrat in his state.

The Dems wouldn’t be smart to take it as a referendum on Trump, unless they’re prepared to run someone far to the right of any of their declared or undeclared candidates.
