Two-thirds of battleground state voters who chose Trump in 2016 but selected Democrats in the midterms say they will return to the president next year.
Midterm victories in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin gave Democrats hope of retaking the Rust Belt battleground states that handed the presidency to Donald J. Trump in 2016.
Yet success in the midterms might not mean as much for Democratic presidential candidates as the party might think. Nearly two-thirds of voters in six battleground states who voted for President Trump in 2016 but for Democratic congressional candidates in 2018 say they intend to back the president against each of his top rivals, according to recent polling by The New York Times Upshot/Siena College.
The results suggest that the partys winning formula in last years midterms may not be so easy to replicate in a presidential election. The Democrats relatively moderate House candidates succeeded in large part by flipping a crucial segment of voters who backed the president in 2016. If these voters remain open-minded again in 2020, Democrats will have a ready-made blueprint for winning back the crucial Rust Belt battlegrounds.
This group is only a sliver of the electorate 2 percent of registered voters and is not representative of all voters. They are overwhelmingly white, 60 percent are male, and two-thirds have no college degree. But the presidents strength among them helps explain why he is highly competitive in states that Democrats carried just one year ago.

TDS on steroids in 11 months. Landslide victory for Orange Man!
Aaarrrrggggghhhhh!!
Donald Trump was elected by Democrats, and if he is re-elected, his margin of victory will again be Democrats.
The Fat Lady is warming up ... just sayin ...
Nonsense.
There are at least 60 000 Trump voters in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania who voted for Obama twice. These voters will never, never, EVER vote for a GOP Member of Congress or Senator.
This was Trump's margin of victory.
More traditional Republican voters stayed home in 2016 compared to 2012 or 2008.
Democrats elected Trump.
There's only one thing Trump voters in the Rust Belt hate more than Democrats, and that is Republicans.
That's because you do not understand the burning hatred white working class Americans have for the GOP.
They didn't vote for Trump BECAUSE he was a Republican. They voted for him IN SPITE OF THE FACT that he was a Republican.
“two-thirds have no college degree.”
Weird, all my college educated friends support Trump. Of course all are military officers.
I did not know that. Thank you. I was truly perplexed by this insanity.
No matter how much enforcement is applied it comes down to the voting machines that are so easily manipulated! Plus, with the revelation of the fake DL that have surfaced, we now know the scope of the massive voter fraud that will take place in 2020 by the globalist , Soros and the rabid left wing demons!! It’s going to be WHO TURNS OUT their base!!! God help us if the DemoKKKrats win all three houses someday!! God help us!!!
That My FRiend....is my biggest fear.....and it should be the Republicans and Independents biggest fear as well!
FIX IT NOW!...it can't be fixed after...
The NYT article does not mention "ballot harvesting," automstic voter registration, and outright voter fraud,
If that carries down ballot, the house will flip.
WI went for Trump when they had Scott Walker as Gov, not they have a guy who’s as far left as AOC who would really be running the state off the rails if not for a Republican state legislature.
MSN, Google and others are news aggregators. Why not go straight to the NYT to read the article and avoid all the tracking BS you get into if you go to an aggregator?
The Republicans are currently flush with money, so I hope to see a major spending offensive to turn congress Republican again. And if possible to get a big majority in both the House and the Senate.
There should not be a single unchallenged Democrat seat anywhere in the US. Even if it is a lost cause seat, it will give the Republican valuable training for future races. And it will force the Democrats to spend money to defend a safe seat.
Yahoo also.
They had Mueller going on during the mid-terms. Mueller was, at the time, thought to be independent minded. So just the fact that he was investigating, and the investigation was being "leaked" and "reported on" often inaccurately by the crazy 'bombshell walls are closing in the beginning of the end' MSM, probably did scare a lot of voters.
But now Mueller has shown there is nothing there. So the Dems have concocted "Mueller 2.0", eg. Ukraine, thinking this cloud of suspicion strategy will work. But it is failing miserably for many reasons, including lack of substance, but mostly because it just looks like brazen partisan attacks. A lot of people hate Trump, but most Americans are fair minded people and frown on injustice and piling on.
