An Illinois town has approved a measure to fund a local reparations program with proceeds from the purchase of recreational marijuana.
On Monday, Evanston aldermen voted 8-1 in favor of the proposal aimed at what officials believe will improve help the citys black community. Local leaders eye marijuana dispensaries as an attractive source of revenue to reverse what they call the ongoing impact of institutional racist and persisting effects of slavery, according to the Chicago Tribune. The fund will be capped at $10 million, according to city of Evanston staff reports. City estimates project the marijuana tax could generate $500,000 to $750,000 per year, the newspaper noted.
However, Evanston officials face roadblocks in collecting adequate revenue from the plan as various suburbs have yet to approve the establishment of recreational marijuana dispensaries, despite them being scheduled to become legal in Illinois next year.
We can implement funding to directly invest in black Evanston, 5th Ward Alderman Robin Rue Simmons said of the measure.
The marijuana tax will be invested in the community it unfairly policed and damaged, Simmons added.
This is a really special moment in the city of Evanston and also in the country, stated Second Ward Alderman Peter Braithwaite.
The development comes as Democrats in the House and Senate have introduced resolutions to approve studies to examine reparations proposals for African Americans over slavery.

It must be mandatory for Dems to be mind-bogglingly stupid, as well as liars.
Government involvement in cannabis guarantees a robust black market.
What a terrific idea!
Will the Somalis in Minnesota and Maine qualify for reparations? If not, why not? How would you determine who qualifies, and who does not?
I don't remember slavery being a big issue in Evanston.
The legal challenges to a town providing “slave reparations” should keep this town’s attorneys busy for decades. And its taxpayers get to foot the bill - no one will be getting any payments besides the lawyers.
That'll be enough to buy everyone a pair of work gloves...Bewaahahaha
Evanston has about 74,000 residents, of whom about 18%, about 13,000 are black.
If this tax generates $500,000 per year, that would be about $38 per year for each black resident.
I can’t help but wonder, what sorts of “investments in black Evanston”, the councilman was thinking of. Public housing? Midnight basketball? Gang abatement programs of some sort?
heh didnt know illinois was a slave state
Slavery was NEVER LEGAL in Evanston, so whats the big deal.
My sister lives in Evanston. Alices Wonderland makes more sense. For example, a group of girls in my nieces high school class succeeded in getting out of swimming class in PE by claiming they identified as cats.
If this tax generates $500,000 per year, that would be about $38 per year for each black resident.
How about a tax on criminal conduct, imposed on the basis of race and the incidence of criminality? Or a welfare recapture tax, also imposed by race? As odious as these would be, at least they would be assessed based on current circumstances instead of those of more than a hundred years ago.
before reparations are payed, the recipient must provide genealogical proof of ancestral slavery. Any person with Caucasian, Asian or American Indian genes are not eligible for the payment.
...should keep this towns attorneys busy for decades. And its taxpayers get to foot the bill...
You just described the Attorney-Government Complex - a yuge jobs program for lawyers (enemies within).
Reparations should be limited to those that have provably 3/5 pure negro blood. Too much miscegenation should be disqualifying.</s>
Free hoodies.
Using that logic, any descendant of an Evanston resident that fought in the Civil War should file a wrongful death suit against the city to attach the reparations.
Since I don’t believe, there weren’t any plantations or slave owners in Illinois, the residents that fought and died in the War were “enslaved” to fight the landowners and slave-owners who benefited from owning slaves.
Further, any person claiming reparations, MUST be able to show a direct line of descendancy from a slave. Any person unable to show direct descendency is precluded from claiming reparations.
That should tie things up in the courts for quite awhile.
Cut out the middleman and just give the marijuana to the citys black community
