Longtime NBC anchor Tom Brokaw issued an apology to Richard Jewell, the security guard who saved lives in the aftermath of the 1996 Atlanta, Georgia, bombing and later became a prime suspect.
Jewell, whose story was recently turned into a movie by Clint Eastwood, started evacuating people from Centennial Olympic Park during the Atlanta Olympics after he spotted the bomb. Days later, media outlets began reporting that Jewell was the primary suspect in the attack. His innocence, however, was announced after months of speculation.
Brokaw, one of the journalists who reported that Jewell was a suspect, apologized on social media on Christmas.
He tweeted, "re richard jewell. 24 hours after the bombing i talked at length with a [senior FBI] official - who did not wave me off jewel as a suspect. i reported that and speculated why. but my last line was for now hes just a person of interest. when the truth emerged i apologized."
He added in a subsequent tweet, writing, "nbc made a substantial $ payment to the family without going through contentious [negotiation]. richard and his mother went through a painful time which i deeply regret. i hope we all learned a lesson, [including] "
At the time, Brokaw reported, The speculation is that the FBI is close to making the case, in their language. They probably have enough to arrest him right now, probably enough to prosecute him, but you always want to have enough to convict him as well. There are still some holes in this case," according to a 2016 article in the Guardian.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution first published the claim that Jewell was a suspect, and CNN followed minutes later, while Brokaw was not far behind.
NBC News was one of a couple of media outlets that settled lawsuits with Jewell in the aftermath of their erroneous reporting. It paid the security guard $500,000, Bob Costas, who defended Jewell's right to due process, told the Associated Press in 1997. As part of the settlement, however, the outlet did not issue a retraction or apology for the news report.
Jewell died in 2007 from a struggle with diabetes.
It is a great movie.
However during the movie I was thinking that as bad as they are railroading/mistreating Richard Jewell, what they are trying to do to President Trump is 100 times worse.
The large media companies are corrupt liars to put it mildly.
Since even before the Waco BBQ.
I’m not real sure how seriously I can take an “apology” to a guy who’s 12 years dead, especially when it ends with “Sure I ruined this guy’s life and helped hound him into an early grave but hey, I became a better person for it.” Good to know, Tom.
As my above quote from the movie "Network" shows, this has been evident for many, many years.

TOO LATE SHITLIPS!
There are no more journalists today; there was this one guy who traveled around the US writing stuff but he died and along with it journalists. These bobble headed news readers are just that - news readers (fake news readers).
yes sir ..........
yes sir ..........
Tom Brokaw should just ESAD. Yesterday wouldn’t be soon enough.
I bet! Brokaw has about as much sympathy for Richard Jewell as the abortionist woman has for the babies whose vocal cords she severed so she wouldnt hear them screaming . . .
Did Brokaw personally contact Jewell? Donald Trump would have.
Paul Sperry is exceptional, a first class journalist all the way.
But your sentiment is accurate in that the legacy media has been bought out by six Oligarch-controlled corporations that have revamped all the main and downstream news studios into a propaganda network with managers that convey 4:00 am talking points retrieved from a phone recording that is destroyed two hours later.
And this free press thinks they run the country.
Free Press, my foot!
They are all owned by Conglomerates.
No he did not, but Jewell is dead so this is all fluff and ass-covering.
True but they think they’re free in what they report - according to the will of the conglomerates whomever they are.
The hyenas called. They object to being compared to journalists and state that hyenas are nowhere near as unsavory. They also wish to note that unlike journalists, they provide an honest service.
Creepy Dunce Joe Biden remarked when news came out of his son’s and his corruption, “you don’t see that anywhere, nobody is talking about it.”
He believes if the propaganda media is not talking about it, it doesn’t exist.
Recently at one of his sparsely attended ‘rallies’ he told a lie to which an attendee called him on it, words to effect, “That’s a lie Joe” to which Biden responded “No it’s not a lie” and the attendee’s reply “Yes it is Joe, it’s a lie. Son of a bitch, he got fired eh Joe? Trump is innocent!”
Joe is learning people are waking up and getting information that bypasses his publicly maligned information channels.
While Obama, knowing Biden is a flop, cozies up to Warren saying women are smarter than men to get the women vote. His string pullers know the Alt-Media is an existential threat and are breaking toward securing the suburban women vote who are unfortunately tuned into ‘The View’, ‘Rachel Maddow’, and other assorted garbage. I never watch that crap, only hear about it on social media or FR.
Orange Man still bad though
