Did Occasional Cortex and Greta have the chance to blame Trump for this yet?

It’s been that way for a couple days. I can’t get on his other sites either (don’t do FB). Can’t say for sure but he was probably ex communicated after predicting the recent quakes.

Taal volcano is literally in the middle a lake--possibly a large caldera. My concern is that we could have a MAJOR eruption that could collapse the volcano into the lake with a devastating local tsunami.

Thanks, Ben,
So far, so good. Just hoping we’re not in the ‘calm before the storm’ mode
It’s a perfect pre-dawn morning here (5:25 AM)

You and most here already know this, but I wonder how many people in that area are aware that it’s the most geologically unstable/volcanically active part of the world ?

Your description of Taal’s site sounds remarkably similar to Anak Krakatoa’s rise from the ruins of its namesake that blew itself apart in 1883 with a massive loss of life, primarily from tsunamis.

The tsunami from Krakatoa was 120-foot tall in places.

I still have a collection of it and it has occurred to me it probably would make a good polishing compound, but it would have to be combined with some creamy substance and I don’t know what grit it would be. Might try it sometime — I still have a couple of older enamel-painted vehicles. But no, we noticed no paint damage from the ash fall, it basically just swept off or fell off with no abrasion. The soil around here already has a lot of that from previous Cascade eruptions, so this was basically like a really heavy duststorm (inches). Less enjoyable to clean it off around my parent’s cabin, where it had rained and the ash turned into a dried mud. Still no damage evident to me. Some structures like old barns could have been damaged from the weight, I guess.

I last visited the city of Tagaytay in 2004, but was in Batangas province in 2017. Tagaytay is in Cavite and the Taal volcano 🌋 is in the lake, below Tagaytay, in Batangas. It has been rumbling for a long time. I think the Mayon, in the Legaspi peninsula, has been going off for years. We are about 250 miles from Taal. We see only traces of ash. My friends are visiting from Texas, and might be stranded here, as we don’t know how this will affect air travel from Manila to SFO/LAX. 👎

Ping to my #73. I can’t really imagine how paint damage would have occurred without application of some external force or high speed. The stuff fell more or less like tiny snowflakes. I believe that aircraft used for reconnaissance did experience some abrasion to plexiglass windshields — not surprising at flight speed. Of course, damage to turbines is well documented.
