China quarantines Wuhan amid coronavirus outbreak: reports
Fox News ^ | January 22nd, 2020 | By Alexandria Hein

The Chinese government has quarantined the city of Wuhan and plans to shut down the airport and public transportation within hours amid an outbreak of the coronavirus, according to reports on the country’s social networks. The virus has been linked to at least 17 deaths and has sickened over 500 others.

Other countries' health agencies and governing bodies have issued warnings to travelers including the U.K., which advised against "all but essential travel" to Wuhan, which is where the virus was first detected. Several countries have implemented enhanced screening measures at airports for flights arriving from the Wuhan region as China faces scrutiny over what officials knew about the outbreak and when they discovered it. Deadly contagion in China spreads to the US.

For weeks the country's health officials maintained that the number of people infected remained at 41, with minimal fatalities, but as more cases emerged and the death toll spiked fears of a cover-up began to surface. Top officials in China have reportedly warned lower-level officials to not cover up the spread of the virus, which is now said to be transmissible between humans.

Those filthy, and I mean filthy buggerers haven’t figured out basic hygiene in most of their country. Quarantine? They are probably moving their undesirables close by and trying to figure out how to salvage the internal organs.

Chuck Fina. Huck them to chell.

Isn’t this the virus the CDC asked for samples of for vaccine testing and the chicoms refused ? If so then it probably has military origins to hide.

Certainly a serious issue. Interesting too.

But andromeda strain sells. People love thinking there could be an apocalypse. It’s titillating.

Governments also get to flex their muscles.

“A virus that has killed people and has no vaccine is big news.”

How many people die from the flu every year?

Does Wuhan have a working sewer system and clean tap water?

I assume so - infrastructure is something this regime has been overbuilding for decades. The cleanliness of the tap water is an open question, but it’s not much of an issue re bacteria and virii, because the Chinese custom is to boil all drinking water, if my Chinese acquaintances are any guide.

I’ve been an amateur China watcher for decades, but I’m not actually Chinese and have only Berlitz-level conversational Chinese. Good enough for ordering food in Chinese restaurants while occasionally evoking gales of laughter from restaurant staff.

Re Wuhan - based on the Wiki, the place was a major piece of real estate when Londinium was a small Roman trading post. I have little doubt that a lot of taxpayer money has been spent on it.

Interesting city!!

Lots of manufacturing, transportation (roads, rail, etc.), lakes (one of the more “lake filled” cities one will see a sat view of), parks, plus rivers, several mountains...

I’m willing to bet the population density of residential and retail commercial areas is quite high, but, as has been pointed out, that alone does not create epidemics.

*As an aside, I’d point out that figures for “vertically stacked” cities can be a bit misleading, too. The tall buildings create living area that does not show up in a simple assessment of land area. That’s a lot different situation than, say, the slums of Manila.

The problem HERE is that Wuhan is a major transportation hub, and Chinese New Year is upon us, well, mostly, them. As you know, a large proportion of the population in China travels to see relatives during CNY, often quite long distances. From personal observation(s), I know they can be quite determined (some would say “bull-headed”) about this sort of thing. So, I wonder what this “quarantine” will eventually entail? Is the Chinese gov’t willing to shut down every route & method in and out of the city? For how long?

The economic repercussions could be huge if the situation continues to deteriorate through and then after CNY.

The Chinese would never admit to quarantining a city unless it was out of control.

If people don’t show up for work for fear of catching something and this becomes an en masse situation, the economy could literally grind to a halt.

Because their animal breeding practices particularly with duck and chicken are in too close proximity to heavily populated centers, whether towns or living quarters of the poultry industry workers. Bacteria and virus exchange are too easy in these situations. Think of anthrax outbreaks in the American West in the 1870s caused by cattle drives and drovers.

“The Chinese would never admit to quarantining a city unless it was out of control.”

It certainly raises that specter.

Agreed.

Still, narrowing the focus a bit: Even if most of Wuhan shows up for work, if the city’s function as a major transportation hub is shut down, the consequences would have to be serious. I’m not quite sure that one can draw a parallel with, say, transportation in and out of Chicago being shut down for, oh, say, even 2 months, but, the effects would be significant.

They shoot that many political prisoners before 10:00.

That was the old days.

Now, they strip-mine that many political prisoners for their organs before 10:00. Even that depends on how many special orders are in that day...  winking face

Prices for food and other necessities have already skyrocketed in Wuhan supermarkets:

Spring garlic (USD 13.00)

Yam? (USD 34.00)
