About 5 million residents left Wuhan before the lockdown because of the deadly coronavirus epidemic and the Spring Festival holiday, mayor Zhou Xianwang revealed on Sunday, as health officials warned the virus’ ability to spread was getting stronger.
There were about 9 million people remaining in the city after the lockdown, Zhou told a press conference.
Of the 2,700 people currently under observation in the city, about 1,000 were likely to be confirmed cases. As of Sunday, Wuhan had 533 confirmed cases.
The central government imposed a lockdown on Wuhan and several cities on Thursday hoping to stop the new virus from spreading to other parts of the country. However, many had already left the city for the holiday, while others rushed out after the lockdown was announced on Wednesday night.
China, meanwhile, said Premier Li Keqiang would head the high-level group to fight the coronavirus epidemic that has killed 80 people and infected more than 2,500 others, while health officials said the virus’s ability to spread is getting stronger.
Beijing city reported five more confirmed cases, including a nine-month-old infant. It is the first confirmed infant case. On Saturday, a two-year-old girl in Guangxi was confirmed to be infected.
The Chinese State Council has extended the Lunar New Year holiday to February 2 to curb the spread of the virus, according to state broadcaster CCTV. The holiday, which was initially supposed to last until January 30, is the country’s most important festival and hundreds of millions of rural migrant workers nationwide travel home for it.
Suzhou was the first city to announce a holiday extension, saying workers at companies within its jurisdiction should resume work no earlier than February 8.

Who knows the true number of cases, and deaths. Because deaths of patients who weren’t tested (because they were out of kits) aren’t recorded as being from coronavirus.
This is almost as bad as a plague starting in Mecca during Ramadan.

On a much, much smaller scale of importance there was a flap over orange lights in moving formations in the night skies in US cities. Cars were stopped on the shoulder by the dozen to watch the mystery lights.
As FReepers guessed they turned out to be sky lanterns (fire inside colorful lanterns blowing in the wind above).
In my city Chinese would have big restaurant parties (birthdays and other occasions) and quietly release them. When it was found they can start grass fires, house fires and once in history a man was burned to death by one dropping) they clammed up totally about which of them were doing it. I know they were the ones doing it near me but they shut up and were secretive. Around police they were mute.
Why would they admit the truth (not a single one did) and get in trouble?
The much more serious Chinese Wuhan Coronavirus virus now will create millions of totally silent, remote Chinese.
Chinese people scare easily, getting the hell out of Dodge would make sense to them but of course it just spreads the possible vector elsewhere. Yes, the CCP is minimizing this and doing a bad job of it.
Can that be arranged?

In the US, possible patients are sent home with orders to stay out of the public until symptoms expand and obsolete SARS testing shows a corona virus.

The Chinese mean well, but communist control type thinking is going to cause a faster infection rate.
The good news is that only a fraction are killed by this - in china. In countries with better health care is should be even lower. I’d be concerned if I lived in China, but I don’t. I’m more concerned about dying in a car crash.
I see this as a new strain of flu, except it probably won’t come back every year.
Wouldn’t plague in Mecca during Ramadan be fantastic? I don’t think we could catch plague. We’re too clean for it, relative to Muslims.
I heard that the quarantine/lockdown was pre-announced about 8 days before it became effective. That gave ample time for people to leave. Boggles the mind.

I’m not sure that’s exactly true.
SARS and MERS don’t come back every year because they were successfully contained.
This corona, like some of the others that actually cause colds, is very very very likely to be in full continuous circulation at this point, particularly if it continues to mutate like other cold and flu bugs do. This one could come back every year, but like other colds, it may not be a major health risk.
Watch what happens when this hits India, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, though the ME, and Africa. They are totally unprepared.
