Yikes. Prayers up for residents and visitors. It’s not enough that they will have to deal with the effects of the quake, but they’ll suffer even more damage once demonicRATS mobilize to help them recover.

“Huge, but 60-70 miles offshore, so can only hope that damage landside isn’t great.”

Thanks. Didn’t see that part.

Still, for their infrastructure it could be really bad. Maybe not if they’re lucky.

Georgetown has 3 cruise ships a few miles offshore. Ships being west of the island will likely shelter them from any tsumani.

Cayman's are volcanos, so no shallow beach for wave to roll up.

Not sure about surrounding Isles.

Yes, 7.7 is a serious shaker. Anyone know the history of such quakes near this area?? Seismic wave alert issued for Jamaica, Cuba and Cayman Islands.

Most vulnerable there will be any passengers in tender boats going to/fro the pier. I’ll expect they might stop transport to/from for a number of hours until the coast is clear.

A lot depends on how the fault line runs.

Our Northridge Earthquake caused concentrated damage from Northridge down to the long beach area. That’s about 12-15 miles. Strangely enough, a mile off that line, and folks may not have received much damage at all.

Even a few blocks of that fault line was critical to the amount of damage.d

Not trying to say no damage happened at distance, but it was not what you would think would accompany a serious quake like that.

Nothing at all about an earthquake or tsunami warning on the NOAA Caribbean Tsunami Alert site.

“given that it takes what a 4.0? quake to actually be felt “

That apparently depends upon the rock that you are sitting on. That’s true for us in SoCal. In other regions 4.0 might feel very strong.

With this and all the biggies in Puerto Rico, what is coming apart under the Caribbean?

Right on the well know fault line there. 8.5 max expected in that region, not super abnormal geologically, but think this is the biggest near there in the last hundred years. 10cm per second vertical shaking predicted in Cuba and Jamacia.

That’s true. After a big one that sort of activity is pronounced. There’s often multiple ones going on per minute for certainly every five minutes.

I set my quake warning setting at 6.0 or more.
