A democratic socialist is a socialist who thinks the revolution can be accomplished, at least in part, through the ballot box or will work for votes while the comrades are not ready to shoot their way into power. The Democrat Party has for a long time been implicitly the American clone of the Social Democrats of Europe out of which the Communists directly came.Bernie is making the implicit explicit.
A “democratic socialist” is when two wolves and a sheep vote on who is for dinner.
A “national socialist” is when the two wolves can’t wait to bother voting so they just eat the sheep.
A “socialist” is when wolf professors debate the fine art of eating the sheep—and when it gets to be dinner time they eat the sheep.
National Socialists: Nazis.
Socialists: Nazis who don’t see themselves as Nazis, but want to shout their beliefs from the top of a building.
Democratic Socialists: Nazis who think like Nazis and who know they are Nazis, but want everyone else to think they are a collection of Franklin D. Roosevelts.
Okay, I made all that up. But it sounds plausible.

A democratic socialist takes a vote, and then steals all your stuff, regardless of the outcome. A national socialist also takes all your stuff, but in the name of his nation. A “socialist” or an “international socialist” does in the name of humanity, or Mother Earth, or some other lofty thing.
