A North Carolina appeals court on Tuesday blocked the states voter identification law from going into effect, finding it was a discriminatory attempt to suppress the black vote, in a victory for Democrats and voting rights advocates.
The appeals court reversed a lower court decision that denied a preliminary injunction against a law requiring voters to produce a photo ID at the polls.
The ruling puts the voter ID law on hold until the underlying lawsuit challenging it is decided, likely blocking it for the November 2020 general election.
The law did include a provision allowing people without proper ID to still vote, but the appeals court found the provision burdensome and that the discriminatory intent of the law was especially evident in those exceptions.
Such a choice speaks more of an intention to target African-American voters rather than a desire to comply with the newly created Amendment in a fair and balanced manner, the three-judge panel said in its 45-page ruling.
The law in question originated from a 2018 ballot initiative passed by voters to require photo ID before balloting. The initiative also assigned to the state legislature the task of writing a law detailing the requirements.
After the Republican-led legislature passed such a law, Senate Bill 824, Democratic governor Roy Cooper vetoed it, only to have his veto overridden.

At some point, people need to say ENOUGH! But they probably won’t until the country has collapsed.
Oh B.S.
Paper ballots (zeugma adds) with human readable marks. They may be computer generated, and/or computer counted, but there must be an audit trail of each vote. H/T zeugmaMexico has voter ID cards required to vote, and when you vote, they punch a hole in your card to prevent multiple votes in the same election.
Purple fingers (needs something to prevent an absentee voter/early voter from re-voting at the poll, maybe blockchain, also maybe a mugshot showing the voter an the photo ID taken at sign in?) H/T for-q-clinton
Mandatory free on demand BIOMETRIC (iris scan, nobody ever left their irises at a crime scene!) photo voter ID card, with a database that instantly flags for arrest anyone seeking multiple IDs. Change of name or address? Simply have your old card voided when you apply for the new one.
No precinct reports their totals until ALL precincts report they have totals. This prevents the last-to-report precinct captains from knowing how much to fudge a report to give a win to their preferred candidate while maintaining some slight semblance of credibility.
Repeal Motor Voter.
End same-day registration where it exists, and allow ample time between registration and election for vetting of credentials of registrants.
Instantly deport any non-citizen who registers to vote. Permanently ban from re-entry any non-citizen who actually votes.
Put a little ⩍ next to the names of those registered voters with death certificates, and detain and put a 72 hour psychiatric hold on anyone claiming to be a dead person...
With the exception of absentee ballots, end early voting. Every voter deserves and has a responsibility to know the latest information before they cast their ballots. H/T WildHighlander57
Absentee ballots must be vetted and counted 10 days before the polling date, with the results secured until the date of the vote. H/T octex
All voter rolls are automatically and completely purged ten days after the Presidential Inauguration. Reregistering to vote every four years is not an imposition. H/T The Chid
I don't know if you get a 10% discount after you've accumulated enough punched holes
Of course, all this would only apply to Federal elections, for federal offices, as that is the legitimate concern of the federal government.
Let the states who have local authority use whatever system they wish to force the elections of their favorite sons and daughters to alderman, mayor or goobernor. They can do it the cheap way, by just following the federal rules for all voting, or they can have separate ballots for local and federal. Their call. It's a free country, ain't it?
The Supreme Court has decided this issue long ago. Many states, including my own, currently has voter I.D.
Another black-robed overlord.
The SCOTUS already ruled voter ID is not discriminatory years ago. But just in time for the election some hack judges puts a temporary hold on it, again. What a surprise.
Are they saying that minorities down in North Carolina are stupid? Is that what this judge is saying?
Racist decision. They think black and brown people are morons.
Ok. Then everything since the old video rental places that demands ID is racist and discriminatory.
Car rentals. UHaul truck or trailers. Getting controlled substance doctor’s prescription filled at the pharmacy. Singing a lease for an apartment or house rental. Getting a post office box.
Getting approval for a bank loan. Setting up checking account. Having a blood test or other medical lab test.
Only voting several times illegally is protected by these judges?
So asking for ID is discriminatory EVERYWHERE?
No need to id yourself when you do anything now, right?
Is this ‘law of the land” like gay marriage?
“signing” a lease
So the racist court thinks blacks are too stupid to get a voter ID? Be responsible?
“...Mexico has voter ID cards required to vote, and when you vote, they punch a hole in your card to prevent multiple votes in the same election.”
Anyone know the backgrounds of these powerful rulers over our rights?
Vote for legislators and governors, have petitions and propositions passed by ballot, ————
and then wait for 3 guys to make the kingly ruling of what their personal prejudices dictate for us to live under.
It does seem theyre the only ones that ever rule on anything.
Laws are for the little people.
This is a State court, right?
Go ahead and refuse to identify yourself to a policeman, your honor, and see how far that discrimination claim gets you.
