Italy sought to rally international support for its virus containment efforts Wednesday even as its caseload reached 447, people linked to Italy fell ill across Europe and as far away as Brazil, and the U.N.s health agency urged a scaled-up response.
Italian Premier Giuseppe Contes government appealed to European neighbors for cooperation, not isolation and discrimination. Italy has been struggling to contain the rapidly spreading outbreak that made it the country with more coronavirus cases outside Asia than anywhere else.
Viruses dont know borders and they dont stop at them, Italian Health Minister Roberto Speranza insisted at the start of a crisis meeting with World Health Organization and European Union representatives in Rome.
Twelve people infected with the virus have died in Italy since Friday, all of them elderly, having other health conditions or both, civil protection chief Angelo Borelli said.
The Italian government has defended its handling of the public health emergency while acknowledging the inability to pinpoint the origins of two clusters in the northern Lombardy and Veneto regions, as well as growing alarm as cases increase.
Germany and France also reported two cases apiece in people with no known ties to Italy, travel to China or contact with an infected person, raising concern about additional clusters of no known origin possibly forming in Europe.

Italy seems to be a weak link.
It's not 447 dead. It's 447 cases.
That’s not a misunderstanding :)
That’s called propagada :)
If someone gets around a lot, and they aren't feeling good, they
can infect a lot of people who in turn infect a lot of others.
Folks need to be on their toes and self-quarantine if there's any doubt.
How did this get out of control in Italy so fast?
They didnt restrict travel from China like President Trump did for travel to America. Such political correctness (and hunger for tourist money) can have dire consequences.
I know Venice was going to stop allowing Cruise ships before this but they do go to other ports.
Even with our best efforts, one Typhoid Mary can render everything we do useless.
Just think of the Chinese woman who left China to have dinner in France and laughed about it.
Italy in a struggle worthy of King Canute...
I blame Marco Polo for this whole mess.
We have long time friends in Lecco who told us they are all in lockdown mode. Nobody there knows how it spreads. Paranoia to the 10th degree.
See, now that right there...that should teach people something. This is how the frenzied panicked ones get started. A clickbait DOOM title, that more than half won't read the article.
Take a little bit of this, some pieced together video of a old asian laying on the floor in public 5 years ago, a bad chinese dub of a lab worker, an "accidentally discovered" text message to the presumed head of the CDC, and the motivation of views and follows from hundreds...maybe thousands of twitter randoms...THAT...THAT folks is how you feed hysteria. Its textbook...absolutely textbook.
So true. Some people love to doe this. Sick.
Italy is just doing this to hurt Trump!
Important to realize that the region in Italy most affected by the COVID-19 outbreak is an area with a large concentration of Chinese immigrants and “guest workers”. Chinese workers staff the Italian garment industry. It is also a very politically incorrect but necessary question to ask the race of those who have become infected and seriously ill.
Many Caucasians and Africans live, work and studied in Wusan. It does not appear that they became infected or became seriously ill if they were infected.
Genetic susceptibility to any given pathogen is a critical factor if a pandemic is likely to occur
Yes, I agree.
Shut down Italy’s tourist industry and they will go completely bankrupt. Any bonds anyone was dumb enough to buy, worthless.
Rubbed out like a bug.
“I blame Marco Polo for this whole mess.”
Imagine how much worse it would be if the Chinese had discovered...us.
