Panic buying strips store shelves as people stockpile amid coronavirus outbreak
Daily Mail (UK) ^

Supermarket shelves are starting to be stripped bare as Americans prepare for the spread of coronavirus by stockpiling on medications and non-perishable items across the country.

People have been panic buying items from stores ever since health authorities warned that Americans should start preparing for domestic acceleration of the virus, which has infected more than 80,000 people worldwide and killed nearly 3,000.

There are now 60 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the U.S. and the first case where the origin of the disease is unknown was confirmed on Wednesday.

Supplies have been flying off the shelves countrywide this week with people posting photos on social media showing the lack of products available in some stores and pharmacies.

A supermarket aisle in Virginia had been stripped of non-perishable items like pasta.

People were also sharing photos of their coronavirus stockpiles at home, including one man in Texas who said he bought a year's supply on non-perishable food in one night.

Jesse Colombo, who is a financial analyst in Dallas, tweeted a photo of his emergency food pile, including rice, Spam, freeze-dried foods and beans.

'I just bought an additional year's worth of food last night. Everyone needs to have a stockpile of food. I wouldn't even touch stocks (or even gold/silver) before having food in these times,' he tweeted, adding he was 'on edge' with everything that was happening in relation to coronavirus and the economy.

A woman in Michigan shared a photo of her 'grocery store basement' that was filled with shelves stocked full of items.

It comes as thousands of people were buying up face masks to protect themselves despite evidence that most people who aren't sick don't need to wear them.

As long as I’ve got ammo and Lucille, I’m ready to victimize my disarmed neighbors and form my very own Saviors.

Too soon?

Oh wow, I do not pay attention to the media so I did not know they were doing this. I now believe there is a Media push for people to panic now.

I am not seeing this in my area. Friends are buying extra but not to that level.

I am stock up on food, but I purchase food last month. We normally keep food stock up for the late southern ice storms.

No evidence of bare shelves in Pratt, KS. Will check Walmart this afternoon.

That's just crazy. I'll starve clutching my gold/silver/stocks next to my cold dead body.

Daily Mail is a UK paper that actually covers American news. I’ve found the papers here are all state propaganda for the most part. RARELY will you see a real story.

Here’s a real story:

Read that again. It sure sounds like China has a problem keeping dangerous pathogens in test tubes where they belong, doesn’t it? And just how many “microbiology labs” are there in China that handle “advanced viruses like the novel coronavirus”?

It turns out that in all of China, there is only one. And this one is located in the Chinese city of Wuhan that just happens to be … the epicenter of the epidemic.

That’s right. China’s only Level 4 microbiology lab that is equipped to handle deadly coronaviruses, called the National Biosafety Laboratory, is part of the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Tomorrow morning I’m going out to a nice breakfast and then panic buy all the way home. Just like every other weekend.

Can I sue for head injury if I get hit by food flying off the shelf? 🤕

My dad lives in North Carolina. Every time the snow flies there, people are gripped with an irresistible urge to make french toast as all the bread, milk and eggs disappears from store shelves.

We should make up a new saying to describe this phenomenon: “Barer than a store shelf in Cuba.”

Yes Bernie, I’m looking at you.

Just don’t keep a round in the chamber of a full magazine. That would be considered a form of ‘panic’ by some.

It’s not like soup or bumwad goes bad, and we generally buy in bulk for savings anyway.

We were due on a case of Tomato Soup and Chicken Noodle, it was in the budget a month ago. . .

I’m going to Aldi today! I expect it to be ast calm as it was on Tuesday.

Walmart was pretty serene yesterday, and stocked to the gills.

12 inches of snow and you would think there will be no eggs milk or bread for months.

I’ve always wondered what it was about winter weather that triggered people to make mass quantities of french toast.

A person can never have too much toilet paper. Anyone who has ever discovered they were out of tp when they had explosive diarrhea will testify to this.
