Former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii have won their first delegates thanks to American Samoa.

WATCH LIVE: PBS NewsHour’s Super Tuesday special coverage

The island has six Democratic delegates and their caucus awarded five to Bloomberg and one to Gabbard, who hails from Hawaii.

Bloomberg got nearly half the votes, followed by Gabbard’s 29%. Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren all were below the 15% threshold, said island party executive director Andrew Bergquist.

Was it his American Samoa advertising blitz or did he pay people off? Maybe a groundswell of support.

Christianity is especially strong these days in Samoa from my understanding. Hope they go for Trump in the general.

The polls closed at 8:00 in California (11:00 eastern). How did they call American Samoa way out in the Pacific so early?

Isn’t Tulsi at least part Samoan? She should have won this round.

At this rate, $20m a delegate. That’s $20m with 6 zeroes at the end. Not $20,000. I am happy to see Bloomberg crash and burn.

Bloomberg ran like he was the front runner. Even Biden, the actual front runner, did more hacking away at his primary opponents than Bloomberg. It’s pretty amazing that with all this money for opposition research, Bloomberg ran zero ads against his opponents. What a putz. No Democrat has to be convinced that the candidates running are against Trump. What they want to know is why they should vote for Bloomberg. Instead of slamming his opponents, he repeated the same old anti-Trump ads, like he was Hillary waiting for the crown to be placed on his head.

These territories don’t vote in the general election. They don’t have enough residents. They apparently decided at some point to allow them a say in Presidential races by letting them contribute a few delegates to the party conventions, but so miniscule as to make little difference.

It’s been one of the more heavily Dem territories, hasn’t elected a GOP Governor since 1988 (and he was the only Republican to win prior elections, too). His daughter became the first Republican to win the U.S. Delegate position in 2014, Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen. She racked up the highest (83%) reelection victory in 2018 of any Delegate candidate to date in AS.

Fun fact about her, she holds the record (to my knowledge) of having lost more races for Congress in the history of
the country before she finally won... Her ELEVENTH try. Sometimes persistence does pay off.

I gotta say, my favorite story of the night was seeing this arrogant little prick crash & burn.
Pardon my unladylike language.

He could have just bought an island for as much as he spent. Kind of a fitting win.

Agreed! And here’s where it TOTALLY blew my mind: a few days ago, I GOOGLED “Bernie Sanders” to get some basic biographical facts & articles — and Mike Bloomberg had an ad placed ABOVE Bernie’s wikipedia page!
I wonder how much he paid Google to do that?!?
But just now I checked & the ad is gone. Haha.

As we all know, American Somoa is the first step to the White House.

I did read that Bloomberg did have full-time paid staffers there, so hopefully that one delegate cost him a ton.

My greatest hope for Bloomberg is that his math is off by a decimal point place, so that once the election cycle is over, he learns that he’s actually broke. It’s not going to happen, but it makes me smile.

Mark

but indeeed, Tulsi Gabbard still has not dropped out, although she scored a single delegate from her place of birth, American Samoa.
