New York governor declares state of emergency as coronavirus cases rise to 76

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) on Saturday declared a state of emergency in New York as officials seek to combat the spreading coronavirus.

Officials have reported 76 cases of coronavirus in New York, including 10 people who are currently hospitalized, the governor said.

New York has commissioned "hundreds" of tests for coronavirus and plans to push for many more, Cuomo said.

"I would test as many people as you can test, because you want to know," he said.

New York had previously reported 44 cases of coronavirus as of Friday, with 35 of those cases in Westchester County.

Dozens of people have been under mandatory quarantine, instead of self-isolation, as a precaution, officials have said.

"There's no doubt that massive quarantine is the best way to slow the spread," Cuomo said Saturday.

This is unfortunate but seems unavoidable and as a silver lining will only help boost PDJT’s quest to make the American economy great again after this crisis is past.

Not so fast, I listened to the presser. He blamed the CDC, FDA and VP Pence, so technically he didn't blame DJT, but he will as the siht continues to hit the NY fan. The Blue states are a disaster and IMO there is absolutely no way this will be contained. But hey, the flu...

The trouble is, people have accepted flu deaths as ‘normal’. By people, I mean the medical community too. Add automobile deaths in the same bucket.

Once somebody dies of something new, it’s the biggest damned thing in the news.

And he is not blaming Trump. As absurd as it sounds, Cuomo is helping Trump by pushing the CDC to let NY State do automatic testing to aid in stopping the transmission. Surprisingly, this is not the first time politicians in NY (esp in NYC) have put aside differences and worked to stop the spread of disease. One example is the response to an outbreak of West Nile in NYC. Politicians on both sides of the aisle know how fast viruses like this can be transmitted on crowded subways.

How are they counting these cases of the virus? Are those isolated at home or those that have had encounter with someone with the virus counted? Have all these people been tested and confirmed to have the virus?
