Social Security recipients who don’t usually file tax returns will automatically get $1,200 payments, Treasury says in reversal

The Treasury announced late Wednesday that Social Security beneficiaries who typically do not file a tax return will automatically get the $1,200 payment.

The announcement is a reversal from earlier in the week when the Internal Revenue Service said everyone would need to file some sort of tax return in order to qualify for the payments. Democrats and some Republicans criticized the IRS for requiring so many extra hurdles for this vulnerable population to get aid when the government already has their information on file.

The reversal came as the Trump administration tries to rapidly get stimulus payments out to Americans in the face of the quickest economic decline in modern history.

“Social Security recipients who are not typically required to file a tax return need to take no action, and will receive their payment directly to their bank account,” said Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin.

I have paid nearly fifty percent of my earnings to federal and state governments only to see it squandered for every unimaginable, unconstitutional purpose. Remember when the initial response to the income tax was that "it will never be more than three percent"?

No one knows but look it up, that is what was said.

I am a free man, and I will never take a penny from those that pretend to do charity while stealing more than they are giving and putting everyone in bondage with unending debt from a privately held bank. I will grovel in a gutter before I will do this.

Hope this doesn’t hurt those on Medicaid with income restrictions for qualification.

The most patriotic thing you can do right now is spend it at a small business.

The stimulus is meant to keep the money circulating. (velocity of money).

If people panic and hoard money right now (like tp), then small business and 10’s of millions of jobs will die.

If you don’t want your check, then do this...

How do you make a contribution to reduce the debt?

There are two ways for you to make a contribution to reduce the debt:

At Pay.gov, you can contribute online by credit card, debit card, PayPal, checking account, or savings account.
You can write a check payable to the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, and, in the memo section, notate that it’s a gift to reduce the debt held by the public. Mail your check to:

Attn Dept G
Bureau of the Fiscal Service
P. O. Box 2188
Parkersburg, WV 26106-2188

Look this is horseshit. If they’re dumb enough to send out this crap, then I’m buying guns and ammo. Sooner or later they will come for it back. I’ll give it to them. Hot and fast.

My mother-in-law, gets a small Social Security check but has to pay all but $40 to the nursing home where she is and Medicaid pays the rest. I wonder if the nursing home/Medicaid will take the money. Or maybe all but $40. I don’t know. I guess we’ll find out.

i’m gonna accept mine but give it some of my poorer relatives who really need it ...

Mine will go to my adult (and taxpaying) kids, who have kids and whose income is in jeopardy. .

No as I will not accept it. I donate to FR and a few other causes out of my own savings. They can stick this CARES bill up Nancy Pelousi’s ass.

It is still unclear if they will send a check in the mail if you don’t give them bank account information. They are really pushing from those bank account numbers, but they don’t come right out and say that they won’t send a check. Initially the media was reporting that they will send a check at a later date. The IRS says nothing.

I'll give it to my grandchildren. They're gonna need it to pay their taxes in the next decade when taxes skyrocket to pay the deficits.

U.S. Senators raised hell, and Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin forced the IRS to reverse itself ...
///////////////////////

My senator. Murphy CT emails everyday saying he is responsible for everything good that happens re: covid. Today he said Democrat senators forced feds to run money giveaway for seniors through Soc. Sec.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Seniors on Soc. Sec who didn’t file tax return were always scheduled to recieve through SS dept. It was in the bill. Dems emailed seniors scaring them into thinking they wouldn’t get anything if they didn’t file taxes. IRS only has tax info on filers. They were never going to process non filers. Freaking fake news to make Trump look bad.
I will bet that Trump will ensure that tax filers get their money in two to three weeks because he doesn’t want all that goodwill to go to waste. When you promise cookies you better deliver.
Senior are getting their SS checks and will get the cash through SS if they don’t file taxes.

Money spent by government has a multiplier factor of 2. Money spent by the private sector has a multiplier of 5.

Money going directly to the people will help the economy more/cause less harm to the economy. In the end, with the privatize sector multiplier of 5, there will be taxes on that money coming ba k to the government.

I think the average SS payment is about $1250/month.
