You guessed it - if we could find folks to do seasonal labor (actual physical work) we wouldn't have farmers relying on imported seasonal laborers....How many of the latest 6 million new jobless do you think are up to the challenge?

Wait on them to pitch in to earn some money and the crops will rot in the fields and never make it to market.

Cut off welfare for the able-bodied.

We can’t afford freeloaders anymore.

if we could find folks

It's called a free market for labor and you 'find' them by offering enough pay. You don't SET wages then try to find people. IT'S THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

I deal with companies like Walmart and Target. In most cases, they will simply buy whatever is cheapest. If they find their competition is selling at 5 cents cheaper, they will come back to you the supplier, and bash you over the head for a 6 cent discount. Retailers like this are hugely responsible for manufacturing leaving for China and elsewhere.

Speaking personally, I would pay more per tub of strawberries if I know its picked by Americans, or if it is local. I actively seek out local food products from our local farmers. I know I’m a small minority among all consumers, but I agree that Americans won’t come out to work on farms if welfare options are available, nor will corporations encourage hiring only Americans, either.

You’ve got it backwards. If we didn’t rely on cheap foreign labor who put up with miserable job conditions, farmers and others would make their jobs appealing to Americans.

By allowing any employers in an industry to use the cheap labor that will put up with crappy job conditions other employers have to do the same in order to be competitive. It pulls whole industries down while betraying American workers.
