A speeding enforcement operation spanning the 5 Freeway from Kern County to the Mexico border nabbed hundreds of offenders Wednesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officers from 10 Southern California stations patrolled the freeway from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., searching for motorists taking advantage of light traffic during statewide coronavirus restrictions, the CHPs Santa Ana office said in a Facebook post.
A total of 356 speeding citations were handed out, as well as 94 verbal and written warnings, officials said.
Fourteen of the offenders were traveling in excess of 100 mph, while the fastest was clocked at 119 mph in the Oceanside division, CHP said.
As California motorists continue to see near-empty freeways, many find it easy to exceed the speed limit, the Santa Ana office wrote. However, speeding greatly increases the risk of causing a crash that results in serious injury or death.
Other areas involved in Wednesdays operation include Los Angeles, East L.A., Newhall, Altadena, Santa Fe Springs, Westminster, Capistrano, San Diego, the Southern Division and Border Division.
CHP did not say whether it was planning similar operations in the future.
5 Freeway, the LA County portion, is not my favorite freeway...Too much traffic...5 Freeway, the Orange County portion, is not too bad...Disneyland is near 5 Freeway...
They wonder why nobody likes them.
Chances are so much higher with no one on the highways. They have to fill their coffers.
I was thinking not to let your guard down and make sure you watch your rear view mirror. Today I was doing 45 in a 40 through a farming area between suburbs - about a 2 mile stretch. Some guy in a BMW passed me going twice that or more.
Just barely got through the yellow light a quarter mile in front of me and bounced over the road intersection without skipping a beat.
There was a nasty one in Fresno. Guy running from the police ran a red light at 100 mph and crashed into another car, killing both drivers.
Lemme guess, those 94 warnings all went to hot babes.
That's all? That's cruising speed in the left lane of the autobahn here in Germany.
I'm thinking this one was on that lovely stretch at Camp Pendelton. That must have been fun!
Earlier this week I-355 was empty in front of me as far as the eye could see as I got on at I-80. As I headed north and driving in the far right lane, several vehicles came out of nowhere from behind me and passed me like I was standing still.
I was doing 90mph. I don't want to know how fast they were going.
I haven't seen a cop on I-355 in well over a month here in Hellinois and I'm on I-355 pretty frequently during the week as I go to my GF's house. No one does the speed limit on it. The slowest I've gone is 80mph on it and I get passed quite a bit. I've had the gas guzzling SUV up to 110mph and had plenty of pedal left. Nice having a super-charged SUV and a beautiful stretch of highway to open it up on.
Pf course the CHP failed to mention the Hayabusa rider who got away.

The driving like an ASSHAT quotient has went through the roof since there are less cars on the road.
Easy to clock 80 mph on highways around here lately. 80 mph doesn’t sound like much, but the average before WWC was more like 35 mph on highways marked 55.
That sounds like I-95 in N.E. Florida.
Here in NE Florida everyone going either North or South on I-95 does a steady 80 mph day or night, rain or shine. If you’re in the right lane doing 70 (the legal limit) you are risking your life on any given day. I haven’t been on I-95 during our current period of collective national insanity, but I’m sure no one has slowed down. Lol.
