Evidence mounts that outside is safer when it comes to COVID-19

Health experts say people are significantly less likely to get coronavirus while outside, a fact that could add momentum to calls to reopen beaches and parks closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Being outside shouldn’t be seen as a completely safe space, health experts say. People should continue to avoid crowds and seek a six-foot distance from other people to stay away from the virus.

But experts are increasingly confident in evidence showing that the coronavirus spreads much more readily indoors than outdoors, a finding that could help guide policy makers seeking to figure out ways to end lockdowns that have shuttered much of the nation’s economy.

“Parks, beaches, as long as they're not cheek to jowl, cycling, walking, this is good,” said Tom Frieden, the former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “Enjoy nature, it’s good for us, and it has very low risk of spreading the virus.”

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan on Wednesday said state coronavirus figures suggested the state might be able to begin a reopening next week. If it does, he said it would include opening state parks and beaches, and allowing outdoor gym classes and religious services.

I would think being outside (as it continues to warm up) would be a good place to be wrt to fighting covid-19 and viruses in general.

Early in this outbreak people posted about the pandemic of 1917 and the fact that the reports from back then that people who were being cared for in make-shift outdoor hospital tents recovered faster and at a higher rate of recovery than the people housed inside hospital buildings. And, the poster noted that the conclusion was that the sun and fresh air seemed to have a positive effect on the treatment of those patients.
Those posts were met with derision by the Fearbro’s and Gals.

They have noted in New York that people who were inside were catching the virus and requiring hospitalization.

What was missing from the report was the nature of the air supply in their homes! Were these people from single family houses (not likely in New York city) or were they in apartment buildings with recycled air?

I remember being in a hotel in Texas during the 1980’s where everything was great until about 2 AM in the morning when smoke laden air was pumped into my room. It really stank.

It was obvious that the air conditioning vents were rerouted at night and they didn’t vent the smoke to the outside.

Speaking of the weather warming up, in hindsight, it would have been interesting to see if things would have turned out differently if everybody had started taking vitamin D3 when we first learned of possible problems with virus.

The problem with D3 is that I understand that vitamins disappeared from the store shelves when toilet paper did.

It’s no mistake that overcrowded urban areas are ground zero for these viruses.

Sunshine is the great RX.

Well they never said you couldn’t go outside in your yard (I know not everyone has one), or take a walk in your neighborhood etc. I guess this is more about parks and beaches though

I have been working outside on my back patio every day since March 16th, all day long. It helps that I live in CA.

I’ve been eating dinner outside every night too.

It’s partly because of what I read about the 1918 pandemic and how fresh air and sun are helpful in pandemics, but also because it just feels nice to be out of the house. I feel less cooped up, and can see my chickens, my dog, the hummingbirds at their feeder. . .

Just go out if you want, and stop complaining. My life hasn’t changed all that much except for baseball, which I’d normally be watching every evening.
