When Luz Chavez was growing up, she dreamed of someday becoming the secretary of the Department of Education, she told ABC News.
Now, a student at Trinity Washington University, her future is uncertain, as she is one of hundreds of thousands who were brought to the United States as a child and is permitted to stay in the country without risk of deportation under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy.
Caught in the crosshairs of Washingtons partisan bickering, DACA recipients, who already dont qualify for federal student aid, are in turn ineligible for the emergency cash grants dispersed by schools and distributed by the Education Department as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This comes as a Supreme Court ruling looms that will decide the future of DACA leaving these students without financial assistance amid the pandemic while their futures remain in limbo.
As a DACA recipient, and everything going on with COVID-19 and as well with the Supreme Court ruling coming at any time -- It's been very stressful, Chavez said, who also is a youth organizer for the group United We Dream.
It's been a very stressful time for me, mainly because I'm also the sole provider in my home because of COVID-19.
Chavez said prior to COVID-19, her mother worked in hospitality, while her two younger siblings worked as after school counselors, but all three of them lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
Im thankful to have a job right now, but Im also very scared because DACA is the only reason Im able to work, Chavez said, explaining that DACA provides her protection from being deported. She said if she were eligible for the federal assistance, it could help provide food for her family and pay for things like WIFI and basic utilities.

“When Luz Chavez was growing up, she dreamed of someday becoming the secretary of the Department of Education...”
Anyone ever met a ten year old girl who wanted to be secretary of the Department of Education? An illegal immigrant to boot? Department of Education in Mexico?
Talking about screaming propaganda.
To bad
Cry me a river, get a job. It should be easy seeing the economy opening up and millions saying no thanks to going back to work at they collect a $1000 a week to watch Oprah reruns.
Hmm.
I wonder if DACA will become a “rolling” program. Kids come over the border everyday. Will they become DACAs?
Bummer. /s
That's a great goal. Deport her so she can do exactly that in her own country.
Hey, this is great! When you’re young you can still do the limbo.
Cry me a river.
To bad she isn’t given the opportunity to become a citizen. But wait, I thought they were. I could be wrong.
Where is that incredible Ilegal Alien, Central American work ethic I keep hearing so much about?
Pelosi and democrat/media stooges threw the poor innocent DACA kids to the side like a used condom. In all this plague panic and previously due to the impeachment scam it goes unnoticed that Trump has achieved victory in securing the border and is getting immigration under control.
You know the best way to avoid deportation? Go through the immigrant naturalization process and become an actual legal American citizen!
It’s so aggravating when you read interviews of DACA brats, they never talk about getting citizenship. Their goal is to be under protected DACA status forever.
Oh my heart bleeds, I haven’t hugged and kissed by 1 year old grandson since these FN chinese pr###s launched this attack, UP YOURS SOFIE AND YOUR EMPLOYERS ABC AND DISNEY
Go back to your native country and become Secretary of the Dept. of Education there, Luz. We don’t really need more immigrants wanting to take American jobs here.
NOT OUR PROBLEM!!! Send them home (let them thank us for US education, health care, knowledge of modern sanitation and practices, and maybe some US culture, morals, ethics, and appreciation of our exceptualism.) Good riddance to them all..
Which means you are a citizen of another country.
Go home to it.
Maybe she could go back to her sh!thole and get free college at Senor Roberto’s Universidad y Bait Shoppe.
