Why Congress needs to support your local news sources in this crisis

During this coronavirus pandemic, access to accurate and trustworthy information in your community is as critical to life under quarantine and as sought after as hand sanitizer and face masks.

Your local newspaper provides news and information unique to your community. Where are the testing sites and who’s eligible, which businesses are open, what is the online unemployment benefit application process, and much more. But your access to local news and information is gravely threatened by the economic carnage COVID-19 has wrought.

While local newspapers continue to field reporters and bring news and advice from public health authorities in print and online — at considerable cost — their revenues have all but disappeared as the businesses that were their most important advertisers were shuttered. That’s why America’s Newspapers and other organizations representing news providers are asking Congress to take urgent action to ensure you don’t lose your vital sources of timely, trustworthy information.

First, we’re asking that Congress expand the Payroll Protection Program to ensure it covers all local newspapers and news broadcasters. While some of these outlets may be owned by large organizations, they must survive on their own. It’s only fair that they should be included in any expansion of the program.

These loans will keep the newspaper employees — your neighbors — on their payrolls and help get the news to you in print as well as online. We appreciate the bipartisan letter of April 19 from U.S. Sens. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., John Kennedy, R-La., Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and John Boozman, R-Ark., that requested waiving the Small Business Administration’s affiliation rule to allow local media outlets to access funding, pointing to the critical role these outlets play in keeping communities healthy and informed.

Second, we are asking that the Trump administration direct current federal government advertising ...

The LV Sun is a crazy left wing newspaper stuck in the middle of the more libertarian Review-Journal

How many newspapers are really “local” anymore? The Virginian Toilet (Pilot) is owned by Tronc who also owns the Baltimore Sun, Chicago Tribune, Orlando Sentinel, etc. Flush em’ all.

I will say the bigger problem is when you have major conglomerates owning newspapers, what’s to stop ChiComs from buying interest into said companies.

We certainly know the ChiComs have exerted tremendous influence in our media.

Newspapers and other media were given special privilege to remain open during the shutdown. They are a business. They sell news. They should figure out why folks don’t want to pay for their product.

“That will be a h*ll no.”

Unfortunately, Sen. Kennedy doesn’t agree with you. I feat Mitch won’t either. Establishment Republicans always want to feed the Establishment.

The Birmingham News, Huntsville Times, and the Mobile Register are all owned by a company out of New York called Advanced Publications. In Alabama, if there was a local newspaper then I would say help them out. All these local papers have been bought out.

Wikipedia: Newspaper endorsements in the 2016 United States presidential election
Trump received endorsements from only 20 daily newspapers and six weekly newspapers nationwide, of which only two, the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the (Jacksonville) Florida Times-Union, had circulations of above 100,000. The small number of endorsements received by Trump was unprecedented in American history for a candidate from a major party...

Among the United States’ 100 largest newspapers by paid circulation, 57 endorsed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, while only two, the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Florida Times-Union, endorsed Trump...

Clinton won support from not only traditionally Democratic-leaning newspapers, but also traditionally non-political and conservative newspapers, including those that had “...either never before supported a Democrat or had not in many decades ... or had never endorsed any presidential candidate, like USA Today.” Many newspapers that endorsed Clinton encouraged readers to vote for her primarily, if not solely, to prevent Trump from being elected president...
