With fewer cars on the road due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Howard County Police Department announced Friday its increased focus on speeding.
Incidents of excessive speeding in Howard County have increased in the past few weeks, according to a county police news release.
With fewer cars on the road as a result of the states stay-at-home order, some drivers seem to have mistakenly assumed that traveling at high rates of speed would be an acceptable practice, Police Chief Lisa Myers said in a statement. We are receiving higher-than-usual complaints about speeding, and officers have observed vehicles traveling much faster than the posted speed limits.

I don’t trust NY state troopers at all.
I’ll do 90 on the garden state in NJ because so many are doing 100. And more
When you’re practically ALONE on the highway, it’s a good idea to do the speed limit.
It’s not like i’ve been in a rush :)
Departments temporarily suspended their quotas due to CUOMO-19.
Maybe they ARE 80 mph roads, just posted at 55.
I don’t have to do a lot of freeway driving, but just driving the surface streets we have seen some really stupid speeding.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
I went out on the freeway last weekend for the first time since really mid-March and I can FINALLY see what all the fuss is about with high performance cars like Porsches etc. I can now finally see what they are capable of. Pretty impressive actually.
Indeed, traffic is FAR down here.
Not surprising some are taking advantage.
HOWEVER, OTOH, many of us are deceived as to our speed when on these open roads. I found myself going 80 on 29 without other cars to help judge. Felt normal, then I looked at my speedometer and whoops! A bit too high even for me.
Maybe everyone is so afraid to be outside that they are trying to get back to the safety of their homes ASAP! I mean c’mon, do they want us do die?
Are you seeing cars being pulled over?
No. Not yet. This is a new story.
No doubt the "Karens" are calling in those complaints.
:) My 23 year old son had just sold his old Corvette just before the pandemic and now regrets it. He says with the DMV down, his friends are easily obtaining speedy cars (there is not much licensing/registration/smog checks going on) and race them with impunity on deserted streets.
Well, it's not so much the speeding, it's that they are spotted as the sole occupant of the car and still not wearing a mask.
Just got back from driving Rt 70 - Rt 32 in Howard County. Cops everywhere and just one car speeding/weaving. So I guess the word is out!
Yup, lots of faster trafffic. Sunday AM, going N on I-5 at 75, got passed by at least 50 mph. Straight road, little traffic, but geez. A few miles later.......busted, highway patrol......that’s gonna be a reckless. How much time did you save?
“How much time did you save?”
Aw come on.............that isn’t why the guy was doing 125.
...and typical speeds for 55 MPH roads are 80 MPH.
This is one of the reasons I love KY.
That being said, they do radar patrols with late model mustangs, but usually against the “non-commute” direction.
When I lived in Seattle, the area of northbound I-5 was always a commuter quagmire, especially by the “S curves”. The traffic inched through. One day I was driving northbound during what would normally be commuter time and it was a holiday. No traffic. When I entered the sweeping S curves I saw something small at the second curve and wondered if it was a motorcycle. I dropped my speed. Yep. It was a state patrolman pointing his radar gun. No, I wasn’t speeding. I learned in king county that if I was behind the wheel I needed to be watching for cops - at all times. So I was always on my guard. I still got pulled over about three times a year and got one ticket a year.
I’ve lived in KY for 9 years now. I don’t even think about cops and spend most of my time doing 65 to 75 in 55 zones. But there is a difference here: roads that were 35 in the Seattle area are 45-55 here. It means I have to be really careful when visiting the Seattle area now. They patrol it hard there. It’s a serious money maker.
