Moderna is based in Cambridge MA and is a US company. The reason they are able to move as quickly as they can on this vaccine is because they don’t actually work with the real virus to produce it. This is the most dangerous and difficult part of creating a virus because the researchers have to find a dead or impaired version of the virus to trigger the immune response that causes the host’s cells to make antibodies. If they don’t do it right they can infect the patient with a harmful pathogen which is unethical.
In Moderna’s case they work backward from the actual antibody protein structure and have a computer design the mRNA sequence of nucleotides that would produce it using the cells ribosome as the factory. They don’t need the actual virus but use a harmless, well tested substitute to carry the mRNA into the cells. This synthetic vaccine can’t make anyone actually sick since the carrier is not able to reproduce in the body.
Using the genetic code like this is a game changer that has never been seen before in medicine. The Chinese vaccines are all based on using dead viruses which is much riskier and harder to test safely.
It is being developed in a partnership with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease headed by Anthony Fauci and the clinical test was carried out by the National Institutes of Health.
Since the government 'invested' our hard earned tax dollars in this vaccine, how much of a cut will we receive from the billions the vaccine will no doubt make?
