It’s all good, a vaccine is coming real soon, the only side effects will be that you’ll always vote Democrat and buy lots of unneeded Microsoft products. You’ll even come to like Obama. It’s quite the medical advance.

But it would have been far worse without the lock down

And the proof of that is?

However, Paul’s COVID-19 death rate includes the effects of shutdown and social distancing which flattened the death curve.

No they didn't.
Almost all the deaths and infections occurred AFTER the shutdowns and continued to rise for over a month, long past the 2 week incubation period.
Even Cuomo himself admitted just last week, that 66% of new infections came from people on lockdowns.

Senator Paul is exactly right.

I have made the same claim in several Comments on Free Republic.

In Washington state, for instance, 99% of our fatalities are for people age 40 and above.

91% of our fatalities are for people age 60 and above.

In addition, the COVID-19 fatality count in nursing homes and hospitals is highly suspect.

Every person who has tested positive for COVID-19 and dies is counted as a COVID fatality, regardless of any other diseases that might be present.

Even worse, the CDC and state health departments have encouraged nursing homes and hospitals to review earlier deaths that were NOT tested and to change the previous cause of death to COVID-19 if the victim had “flu-like” symptoms.

Trillions of dollars of economic destruction based on a severe common cold virus that only kills the elderly and the infirm.

Complete insanity!

But it would have been far worse without the lock down.

The lock down simply flattened the curve, it didn't make it go away.

The volume under the line, total deaths, remains the same.

It simply spreads the same number of deaths over a longer period of time.

But you know that, you're just running out of lies to spread around.

Re: “The disease is not a nothing-burger - and no I don't support totalitarian lock-downs.”

I agree with you - COVID-19 is a severe common cold virus that has killed thousands of the elderly and the infirm.

However - is it more deadly than a severe influenza virus, like the one that killed 61,000 Americans in 2018?

In my opinion - no.

The total number of “Deaths-All Causes” in the first 18 weeks of 2020 is only 14,000 deaths higher than 2018.

If the CDC counted influenza deaths with the same fraudulent method that it counts COVID deaths, influenza deaths would be much higher than COVID deaths.

Flattening the curve gave the medical profession more time to figure out the disease and come up with better treatments. Probably did save lives instead of just spreading the deaths out.

That would be true if we hit herd immunity. But we aren’t even close.

The virus seems to be dying out because of Summer and the lock downs. Given some of the data out of equatorial countries, it’s not certain there will be a summer lull.

Whether it will ramp back up remains to be seen.

Tennessee was starting to look pretty good, But we recorded 623 new cases today. That’s the highest in 18 days. So I don’t know. Too early to call.

I figured you would sidestep the question.

Well, maybe not, you post more a ‘move the goalposts’ kind of lies.

I haven't moved the goal posts.

The goal posts for me were always to beat the virus. I've never signed up for herd immunity being the only way through this. And I won't.

Even heavily hit states like NY are at best only 25% of the way there. We already have 92,000 dead. If nothing improves on treatment or prevention then we're looking at at least another 240,000 dead if we go the herd immunity route.

Totally unacceptable.

And who knows how many with permanent lung or other organ damage.

I was for stronger travel bans and strict quarantines to prevent it from ever getting a foothold in the US in the first place.

And I was and still am for masks for everybody in areas where it is circulating.

I didn't call for shut downs, but I supported them once they occurred with the knowledge that they couldn't last forever even if the virus didn't go away. I think the lock downs would have been more effective if everyone had worn masks during them when out and around others.

The lock downs did flatten the curve. None of our hospital systems were overwhelmed, a very good thing. The lockdowns:

The economy was going to shut down in part on it's own. Airline's weren't shut down by government but their traffic is off 90%. Restaurant volume was falling prior to the shut down. People were calling in sick to avoid being around other people.

So it's not clear to me what the difference in cost between a government shut down and the shut down that was occurring anyway is.

A study from 1918 showed that cities that did lock downs fared better than cities that didn't economically.

I think if we had all adopted mask wearing in late Fehruary, we might have prevented a shut down and saved a lot of lives.

I still call for masks to be worn by everyone in any area where the virus is transmitting. It's a small inconvenience that likely will help beat this virus.

This plot shows weekly deaths historically and for the current year. If you look at the US plot, in mid-April it was showing 30,800 deaths per week above the mean per week for the previous several years. That is not inconsistent with the 90,000 total deaths to even date attributed to Coronavirus.

90,000 deaths out of 1.5M confirmed cases is a 6% mortality rate. 1.5M confirmed out of 12M tests puts the lie to the notion that there is a large factor of undetected infected individuals.

So it's not just the common cold, or the flu.

But I don't support lockdowns.

It is no worse than the flu in terms of mortality for people under 60. That is the data pure and simple. Additionally, in the most affected age group >85% of people survive it. Those are the fact, they are not in dispute.

It starts out more deadly than the flu for the young and just gets worse from there.

In Maryland, the death rate of those between 10 and 29 is 0.189%—higher than the influenza death rate. It increases with age. In the 50-59 age bracket, 1.9% of those who contract Covid-19 die. A whopping 28% of people age 80 and up die.

It does not behave like influenza at all. It affects multiple organs, destroys the lungs and heart. Terrible.
