WHICH IS MORE RACIST—HIKING OR JOGGING?
Powerline ^ | 5/19/20 | STEVEN HAYWARD

Last week we noted that hiking is now considered tainted by historical racism. Hiking. On mountain trails. Well move over you racist hikers. Make room for racist . . . (checks notes) joggers! Because jogging is racist, too.

“Jogging Has Always Excluded Black People,” Natalia Mehlman Petrzela tells us in the New York Times:

Running has been a pastime marketed primarily to white people ever since “the jogging craze” was born in the lily-white Oregon track and field world of the late 1960s. Black people have not only been excluded from the sport — one survey by Running USA found under 10 percent of frequent runners identify as African-American — they’ve also been relentlessly depicted as a threat to legitimate, white joggers.

The most apparently egalitarian exercise of all, running, is anything but — especially when it comes to race. . .

Marketing and media didn’t help: From the cover of People magazine to ads for Nike . . . the joggers were almost uniformly depicted as white. . .

American distance running is still stubbornly white. The United States is only for the first time sending black female marathoners to the Olympics in 2021, while the competitive amateur and recreational levels of the sport remain overwhelmingly white.

Check out the finish lines at just about any half-marathon or marathon race. Or check out the local 5K races. At least in St. Louis, where I run, there are finishers of all ages, all sizes, all races, and all abilities. It is likely the most diverse group you will see gathered anywhere. And I can also say from my own experience that conservatives and liberals will run together without any problem. Runners are among the most supportive group of people around, in part because we know it takes a big commitment to complete a long-distance race. And whatever the other person might do with their time, they are respected for their willingness to take on an endurance race.

If you look at olympic marathon medal winners over the last many years, running certainly looks racist to me. It’s all Kenyan’s and Ethiopians.

A mystery. I love to hike. I don’t run or jog, but I do Nordic walking, which is training for hiking and also easier on the knees than running and gives you upper body exercise. I live in a town with a large black population, and for years you never saw any black people running or exercising...all of a sudden, thanks mostly to health programs from the YMCA, I am seeing lots and lots of youngish to middle aged and even older black people, both male and female, running together in groups.

And they even kept it up during this stupid lockdown! We waved wildly at each other when we passed on the bridge or along the river.

Of course, there have always been lots of young people of all colors, middle school through college, running these routes, mostly because they’re on teams or in special programs.

So there’s nothing “racist” about running or jogging.

And nothing “racist” about hiking, either. I hike with a group that always has a couple of black hikers turn up. It may not be the sport of choice in the black community, but people get to make their own choices. Even black people, which may come as a surprise to our racist media.

The root issue to liberals is “it is white dominated, therefore bad”. This is similar to hating on the hard sciences for being mostly male, but there’s no problem with the life and social sciences being female dominated.

It is mostly white, therefore it is inherently bad and must be shamed, shut down and/or reformed to exclude whites.

Ha..! Back in the early 80s I worked with a black guy from Philly who was real good at our Military Intramural sports of Football and Basketball.

I played Baseball and Hockey - so I was razzing him that he should come out and play with us...

He stated: “No one wants a sport where the ‘brothers!’ have a stick in their hands!” We laughed are asses off...

Great Guy - I think he went to Bowl Game when he played at Temple...

Swimming, hockey, curling, golf, rugby, horse racing all lack black people....or maybe black people are too stuck up and snobs to join in? Either way, I could give a flying crap.

Ridiculous nonsense! Last time I looked, there were no “Whites Only” signs on mountain trails.
Just another way to try to make Whites feel guilty and acquiesce to the forthcoming Reparations bill.

Blacks are more likely to be urban campers than be joggers.

We visit National parks over and over. Fairly recently we visited the new to us Mesa Verde NP visitors center in Colorado. There were almost no black people. As I recall, there was one black family. It was not peak tourist season but the place was covered up with visitors.

There were tons of Asians.......literally busloads. : )

What’s interesting culturally is that the NPS has gone to great lengths, in some instances overboard, to provide areas and exhibits in the NPS museums and visitor centers specifically to illustrate the black cultural aspects of the park or monument. I have observed carefully and there very few black people present any where much less the special exhibits.

Last year we visited several parks and museums in Virginia. The current vogue in Virginia is to illustrate enslavement. The word slavery is for some reason never mentioned. The black presence is primarily students visiting with their school group.

Plug For America.....

I recommend that couples purchase a National Park Pass Port Book. When you visit a park or monument or museum or battlefield administered by the NPS, you get a stamp with the date. After a while, getting a stamp becomes motive for driving 50 miles out of your way to visit a park or monument.

The pass port stamp assures you have made an effort to learn something about America.

With a Golden Eagle pass, you can visit all parks and monuments free.

I paid my entry fee and will be participating in the Labor Day* Five Mile Run. Nowhere on the entry form was any reference to race.

*It’s been Memorial Day Saturday for the last 40 years or so; postponed this year.

The United States is only for the first time sending black female marathoners to the Olympics in 2021...

Marathoners (all track athletes, in fact), are sent to the Olympics because they have the best QUALIFYING TIMES. And when is the last time the U.S. sent a white sprinter there?

The sole purpose of this article is to create division where none should exist.

What never is considered by close-minded leftists that write this trash, is there are many blacks that do not like to do ‘stuff that white people do’, so even if there was a shred of truth to it, it’s a self-perpetuating situation.
