Father of 20-year-old patient who beat elderly man at Detroit nursing home says son shouldn't have been there

The video of a 20-year-old brutally beating an elderly patient at a Detroit nursing home has gotten national attention - and even the President has weighed in. Now police are investigating a possible second incident caught on camera while the young man's father says there's more to the story.

The 20-year-old, who FOX 2 is not identifying as he has not yet been charged with a crime, was on video beating an elderly patient at Westwood Nursing Center earlier this week. The violent video is incredibly difficult to watch for most - including the father of the younger man, who says he's praying for the elderly victim.

"That hurts to see that," he said. "What he did is wrong and (I offer) my apologies to the victim's family."

The father, who asked not to be identified, said his son has had several health issues growing home, has autism, and called from a group home in Chelsea last week to say he wasn't sleeping, was feeling anxious, and hearing voices.

"I just don't want people to think that he's this vicious individual. He's got mental issues," his father said.

He said his son called 911 and was taken to a mental health facility in Ann Arbor. Last Wednesday, he was diagnosed with COVID-19 and said he was supposed to be taken to another facility to be quarantined. "It should've never happened because he should've never been put in that environment."

His father also says there is a pending case in Washtenaw County where his son is accused of assaulting a staff member at another group home. The young man's father says he's had serious behavioral problems for a long time and should have been closely monitored at Westwood.

"Had I known he was there I would've never have consented to it," he said.

On the 20-year-old's YouTube channel, you can see dozens of boxing videos and so-called pranks. The young man is known to attend NorWayne Boxing Gym but the folks there say he was never a member or a part of the gyms youth program. They issued a statement on their website:

"We share everyone's sadness over this situation. What this highlights is the importance of helping at-risk kids in our community at an early age."

Meanwhile an attorney for Westwood Nursing Center tells FOX 2 they were unaware of the attack until they saw the video, they're investigating the situation and cooperating with police. They added the young man was not a long-term resident.

Detroit police say the man is in custody and awaiting charges. Police are now investigating whether the same man is involved in another beating of an elderly woman.

The 20-year old wasn't an employee. He was a patient.

Apparently housing younger homeless people, drug addicts, alcoholics, and various mental cases in nursing homes alongside elderly residents is a thing now.

OMG

this was a planned attack because he video'd it...shows intent and thinking....

we get these types of characters in the hospital....they're put on Mental Health Holds and believe me, no nursing home in their right mind will take them, whether they be druggies or bipolar etc....its just too much danger....

we would have kept this guy with either an actual sitter or a telesitter, to keep an eye on him....

that he was place in a senior nursing facility with those frail helpless people was an atrocious act.

Lets be honest, a lot of these retirement home operations do marginal background checks on their employees.

He wasn't an employee. He was a resident. See my post #13 above.

His mental problem was hate and evil.

If a white did that to a black elderly person, the media wouldn’t allow that excuse.

Should every person that’s ever been in the kkk say they had mental problems? That doesn’t work for me either.

Black punk beats up elderly white man in a nursing home and they try to make the black thug out to be the victim.

Contrary to earlier news stories, he wasn’t an employee, but a young patient who beat an elderly patient.

He wasn’t a resident. He had been a resident in a group home for the mentally ill, where he apparently beat up some of the staff, and had been moved to this nursing home after being diagnosed with Covid-19.

As I said. Because my point was not about mental health. His father said his son was not vicious. His son is vicious. There are many nuts:mentally ill people who would never beat a helpless elderly person in bed.

Same idea as after an atrocious act, mom goes on tv to say what a nice child she has

That was vicious. He is vicious Mental health is another subject.

Interesting how the first reports said that the 20 year old was a NURSE at the nursing home.

The hiring practices of Nursing Homes has been an issue for decades.

While true, the article says that the 20 year old was a patient, not an employee.

The 20 year old covid patient beat the elderly patient in a nursing home.

Seems the first stories out about this over the past few days were a little bit in error.

Either that or I’ve warped to the wrong planet.

And autism is being used for people who are just plain violent & don’t belong in schools or the general population.

So, he was now residing in the nursing home. A resident.

Point is, he wasn't an employee.

What I saw confirms “Crazy” and “vicious” and “disgusting”, he should never have been in that position. the father knows. he been through the system. Seen his son go bad. Over and over, it is not new to him but he never imagined this was the outcome, he was just happy he had a job at somepoint. denial.

You can word it any way, mental health etc. he is and has been “crazy” and has been messed up violent. It is a disgusting crazy demon possessed violent thug. Sometimes a dad has no control over what his son does and is just and observer of a “crazy” son sounds the alarm after the alarm is already sounded. he has likely been saying it for a long time.

His son is vicious, his father blind.

he had covid? WTF was that? a crazy crazy addition to the story.

We find a house, quite possibly in your neighborhood, and transform it into a private asylum for the individual being placed there. Special “unbreakable” furniture, plexi windows that don’t open except for a crack (sometimes bars across on the inside to keep them from peeling the windows out of the frames), 1500lb magnetic locks on all external doors, and 24hr staffing are pretty common. Some require more than one person on duty and have special seclusion (”rubber rooms”) for when behaviors get more extreme.

Many of those most of you would guess are in hospitals are in fact living next door to you. Some of these people really don’t belong on the outside. Its not that they tend to attack staff, that’s a regular occurrence, its that too often these people do get out when they shouldn’t be and do present a danger not to just themselves but to members of the community.

I would like to blame the problem on the judges and doctors that knowingly release these individuals into community care settings but, its the legislators of the states that have refused to properly address the problems since they began in the 60s. Its only going to get worse. The legislators are cowed by the “disability rights” crowd and NAMI con artists on the left and afraid to raise taxes to pay for proper care due to the “fiscally responsible” on the right so they aren’t going to stick their necks out with an ever looming election. Both activist groups entirely wrong and not having any understanding of the situation and neither side will listen to those that know better than them.

>> “I just don’t want people to think that he’s this vicious individual. He’s got mental issues,” his father said.

The society that neglects the mentally ill and fails to support the troubled family is largely responsible for these outcomes.

Most every mass shooting over the last few decades involved a neglected, mentally deranged individual. Most recently, Lanza of Newtown, CT. Cruz, Parkland, FL — two actively neglected cases.
