Police Killing of Breonna Taylor Fuels Calls to End No-Knock Warrants

Growing outcry over the police killing of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old black emergency-room technician, in her Louisville, Ky., home is stoking calls to end the use of no-knock warrants like the one officers secured to raid her apartment.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Thursday it was opening an investigation into Ms. Taylor’s death. The same day the Louisville police chief, Steve Conrad, said he would retire. Earlier this month Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear urged state and federal investigators to review the Louisville Metro Police Department’s internal investigation of the shooting.

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul and U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie, both Kentucky Republicans, are calling for the elimination of no-knock warrants, which allow police to storm a residence without first announcing their presence.

The warrants have generated controversy in the U.S. for years, and some police departments have discontinued or restricted their use after raids went awry.

Together with the February killing of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old black man shot and killed in southeastern Georgia, the case has focused attention on issues of race and law enforcement.

Ms. Taylor was asleep in bed with her boyfriend, 27-year-old Kenneth Walker, when three plainclothes police officers broke through her apartment’s front door early in the morning on March 13, according to a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by her family against the officers. Investigators said an alleged drug dealer they were pursuing had received packages at Ms. Taylor’s home, according to a search warrant affidavit.

Attorneys for Ms. Taylor’s family said police burst in without warning, leading the couple to believe they were intruders. Police said that although officers had a no-knock warrant, they still knocked several times and announced themselves.

Google works

Not as well as I might have hoped. I read the first half dozen or so stories and none of them addressed the questions I asked.

For WHAT? Some DRUGS? WOW! Is the drug problem SOLVED, now?

No knock ONLY to save a life. To catch someone with drugs, STUPID!

The “war on drugs” is LOST!

It was the Harding Street raid in Huston, Texas where the cops murdered the husband wife and lied to cover it up. Their problem was that they told so many lies that even their superiors did not believe them. They began investigating and the upshot was that they are now facing State and Federal Charges. The usuals defended them until the last dog was hung. I have been doing pretty good. How are you been doing?/p>

He doesn’t have to be in law enforcement to recognize bad tactics.
One doesn’t need to be a baker to recognize burnt biscuits.
Demanding only those working in a given field may make judgments is ridiculous.

You don’t know what happened because you have only heard one side of the story. And you are basing your opinion on the statements of the upstanding attorney who represented the Trayvon Martin family and the Michael Brown family.

why would they go to the trouble of getting a no-knock warrant, and then knock?

And that assessment is from how many years you were in law enforcement?

That assessment is based on the knowledge that you don't need a no-knock warrant in order to knock.

I could just as easily assume they got the no-knock anticipating certain precautions, but when they got there, they decided those precautions weren’t needed.

And this happens a lot - just-in-case no-knock warrants?

Until body camera evidence emerges it’s safe to assume the cops are lying.

Might be a safe bet.

Thanks W. Hard to believe some of those bootlickers are FReepers, or at least call themselves FReepers.

It takes all kinds to make the world go around. It amazes me they don’t even admit that they bow to to police can do no wrong. My guess is most are cops, family of cops or just so blind the can’t accept corruption is everywhere. The problems with cops is the same with the FBI. They put their “brotherhood” before duty, God and country. That is plain evil and must be stamped out.

The same bootlickers were all over the Waco killing of bikers. No problem with cold hearted cops executing people. That one might be triggered by something else entirely. IDK. Right is Right.
