Biden set to make risky economic argument against Trump

Joe Biden is taking on President Trump over the economy.

The former vice president’s campaign believes he has an opening with voters on an issue that has been a strength of Trump's given the economic harm caused by the coronavirus pandemic, which has locked down businesses and led to skyrocketing unemployment.

They plan to argue that Trump handled the pandemic poorly, is mishandling the economy, and that their candidate is the better leader to shepherd the country to a recovery.

“No one thinks the economy is in a good place right now,” said one Democratic strategist who supports Biden. “Trump got us here. And Biden can make the case that he’s the one who can lead us out of here.”

Allies say the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee will lean on his record in 2009, when he was a part of the Obama administration handling the recovery from the last big recession.

The decade since that recession included tremendous growth, though the Obama administration also came under heavy criticism from the right and the left for its handling of the issue, raising questions over how effectively the experience can be used to buttress Biden.

Biden signaled his focus on the economy with an interview Friday on CNBC.

His message was focused on the idea that the government’s first job must be handling the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

“The way to fix the economy is to get the public health response correct,” he said.

I can just imagine what the economy would be had the pandemic happened under the watch of Zero and 12% pre-existing unemployment. We Would be in a Depression of no escape. But just look at the stockmarket - 6,000 off it’s all-time high and climbing up hill as companies realize the US is in the best position, thanks to President Trump, to pull out of the pandemic damage and thrive.

It’s not Trump’s fault that the blue state governors won’t open their states.

It’s not Trump’s fault that the blue state governors won’t open their states.

Exactly. And there are plenty of statements by Trump wanting to restart the economy and plenty of statements from Democrats why we have to keep businesses closed.

Why Democrats think they can get away with pinning the economy on Trump is ludicrous because the statements by Trump and Democrats make it clear Trump wanted to keep the economy open while Democrats DEMANDED a lock down.

Any internet search will give you the quotes and establish the timeline.

#He can make the case...that he’s the one to lead us out of here?”

I had to stop there because I was laughing so hard!

Trump engineered the economic decline? I think it was the virus that engineered the decline.

So the very thing they were screaming about and trump did (on his own accord) is now something they wouldn’t have done and he destroyed the economy. Good plan

Cloward-Piven keeps coming to mind.
If not a planned implementation then at the least an effectual one.

Joe hasn’t done anything. His entire argument is “I would have done better.”

Which means nobody can prove he was wrong. He can sit there and say, "If Trump had done this and that then we wouldn't be in the condition we're in." That's the advantage to being the challenger. Trump has to run with double-digit unemployment and a crashed economy that happened while he was in charge. It will boil down to who people believe can do the better job of bringing the economy back, and that will be decided by who had the better line.
