L.A. seeks help from National Guard as lootings, vandalism worsens

Mayor Eric Garcetti has asked Gov. Gavin Newsom to mobilize the National Guard to help Los Angeles deal with worsening looting, vandalism and violence on the streets.

The move comes less than an hour after the mayor expanded expanded a curfew, first set for downtown, to the entire city from 8 p.m. Saturday to 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva said he is also seeking help from the National Guard.

The decision came as the situation in the Fairfax District deteriorated, with shops, including Nordstrom and the Apple store, vandalized and looted. A small police kiosk in the mall was set on fire.

At 7 p.m., the LAPD declared an unlawful assembly in an area between Melrose Avenue and 6th Street and between La Brea Avenue and La Cienega Boulevard. "Residents should stay inside. Business should close. Those on the street are to leave the area immediately," the LAPD said.

When a protester smashed the front window of the nearby Whole Foods with a hammer, some screamed, "Don't do that! Please!," while others cheered.

The protesters began to clash among themselves; those urging peace created a barricade of shopping carts around the store's entrance to protect it, but moments later, another group jumped the barricade and broke the store's door down.

More than three dozen officers stormed the scene from the west side, firing rubber bullets and sending hundreds sprinting. "Stop running!" one man screamed, standing atop a car with a megaphone. "Stand as one! Say his name!"

Really?

We've had a few days of rioting and looting in Minneapolis and Atlanta and other cities. LA has had all that time to plan and prepare. Per wiki, with 9,974 officers and 3,036 civilian staff, it is the third-largest municipal police department in the United States, after the New York City Police Department and the Chicago Police Department.

And yet, with all that manpower and prep time, at 8:30pm they're asking for help...while the NYPD is driving over protesters.

Too bad they didn't start a riot and an uprising over Garcetti’s unconstitutional, dictatorial, tyrannical, brutal lockdowns and give Garcetti the same thing Caecescu got.

It was breaking into stores on Rodeo Drive that changed the mayor’s mind.

LA is also very large geographically. Not exactly Manhattan 38 locations have reported rioting. There are some CHP and SO also so hard to tell how many on duty

The entire force should be on 12 hour shifts, but better yet where is the guard?

Rich White liberals in West LA and Beverly Hills feeling the pain from their supposed political allies on the left. These are not “right-wing” White supremacists committing this mayhem. I see more and more Americans are beginning to link this crap with the Democrat Party.

I was closer, Pomona.

In fact the feds moved people out of watts, welfare types and parolees and settled them in three areas of Pomona destroying the character of the city By 1977 there were knife fights in Jr Hi and it was the armed robbery (per capita) capital of the US. The surrounding cities refused them and RE Brokers wouldn’t place them even for federal money.

During the riots I watched the Joe Pyne show. He put a gun on the desk and said I’m ready if they come up Hollywood Blvd. wasn’t fired for that.

They pay to live there and they are usually isolated from the crap. Although the Fairfax district is close. The reason they went up fairfax is The Grove is a more open shopping center thanRodeo drive. IMO

"Stand as one! Say his name!"

Ha. I bet half already forgot or never knew his name as they loot the whole foods.

I was not very happy when our only kid moved from California to Texas near Austin in 2016. I was also not excited to have followed that move with our own in late 2018. Mostly relieved to be out of California. Assuming that Texans don’t screw the pooch, we should be good for a few years.

but I see the rioters wore their masks for the most part. LA Mayor Garcetti will be pleased.

Someone should leave a stack of the maps to the stars on top of those pallets of bricks conveniently left on the streets of downtown America.
