San Francisco Mayor, Police Chief enact citywide curfew after Protest Violence

SAN FRANCISCO -- In response to violence and vandalism that have grown from what had started out as peaceful protests Saturday, San Francisco officials late Saturday night imposed a curfew starting immediately, running until 5 a.m., and beginning again at 8 p.m. Sunday.

The California National Guard is also on standby as of late Saturday night to respond to lawless behavior in the city, San Francisco officials said during a hastily called video news conference late Saturday night. Vandalism and attacks on police officers accelerated after nightfall Saturday, after several hours of relatively peaceful protests.

Late Saturday night, police were dealing with a spate of arrests in the Union Square, where vandalism to stores and looting were running rampant, police Chief Bill Scott said. There also were outbreaks of violence along Market Street.

"We know people are hurting - officers are hurting, my family is hurting," said Scott, who is black. "We understand as a police department that people need to get out and express themselves."

But he and Mayor London Breed said expression turned to violence and destruction, and that such behavior can't continue.

"What we are seeing tonight ... the vandalism, the violence in our city, that's something we will not tolerate," said Breed.

She acknowledged "a lot of hurt, a lot of pain," especially in the African American community that has been impacted for decades by "bad policy and bad decisions."

"This is the last thing I wanted to do as mayor," Breed said.

Last night in one of the cities cops were stopping cars and pulling people out and arresting them for breaking curfew but ignored the rioters on the street...

I think these were people just going by and not participants...

I think one of the reasons we’re seeing these riots and the general lack of respect for the police is because of police enforcement activities during the shutdown. People were harshly prevented from going about innocent daily activities.

In Chicago, for example, the police have been unable to stop the looting and destruction...but three weeks ago, they were able to roust the congregation of a Romanian Evangelical Church and even impounded their cars while they were in church, and the next week they surrounded a mostly black Baptist church, yelling through bullhorns and pounding on and threatening to break down the front door.

People have lost all respect for “the authorities,” they feel driven out of their former lives and place in society, and Antifa is capitalizing on it.

Ahhhh, curfew. Just another way to oppress/control the masses. But I understand it is needed where the looting happens.

Not a single one of those ‘wimmens’ would look one whit better in anything Victoria’s Secret sells.

I wasn’t saying the rioters had been going to church before. I meant that a lot of people in the US now are less supportive of the police than before, because they’ve seen them use heavy handed tactics to shut down perfectly legitimate things. And because a lot of normal social outlets, from the neighborhood bar to the playgrounds and schools to the beaches, were shut down, many people lost whatever little connection they had to stability and order.

Of course, when it comes to stopping rioters and thugs, the police and the authorities that efficiently shut down normal life for all appear to be out of their depth...

I watched my local Los Angeles TV coverage last night...

There was a citywide curfew starting at 8 PM...
LAPD officers arrested people who showed up in Downtown Los Angeles after that time...The tow truck took away their cars...I think those people showed up at Downtown LA because they wanted to steal some merchandise...In my opinion...
It was chaotic in Downtown Los Angeles Friday night...Those drivers wanted to be part of some “action” Saturday night...

LAPD actually arrested people last night...TV news helicopters filmed those scenes...
The helicopters also filmed the cars stopping by some destroyed business...People got out and went into the business...They came out with some merchandise...Then they drove away...

I am NOT upset that drivers, who showed up in Downtown Los Angeles, have to pay several hundred dollars to get their cars back from the police impound place...They should have stayed home...
