Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts continues to position himself as the high court’s swing vote -- siding with both his conservative and liberal colleagues in close decisions -- including most recently in cases related to the coronavirus lockdowns.
The latest instance of this came days ago when the court rejected an emergency appeal by a California church that challenged state limits on attendance at religious services.

Another Trump nomination to the high court is essential if Roberts is to be kept from playing Anthony Kennedy for the next decade.
I think they misspelled “swinging”, if there was truly justice in this country.

Roberts, on the other hand, lied about who he was and what he believed in order to get that seat. He's scum.
But then again, he was appointed by W. If W had his way the two people he appointed would have been Roberts and Harriet Miers, a woman who was a democrat until the 90s. Imagine if he'd gotten what he wanted there.
Sometimes elections don't have consequences, if it's a Bush. Same result, R or D when the R is a Bush.
He has assumed the role as unreliable.
I firmly believe that Roberts makes his decisions based on how he wants “his” court to be seen by history, not based on the Constitution. Roberts does not want “his” court to be seen as conservative or liberal. As a result, he decides based on some messed up thinking about whether the Court has too many conservative or liberal “wins” as of that time and adjusts his position accordingly. His contorted reasoning on several issues, including Obamacare, I think supports that theory.
We have to put up with this asshole till Ruthy goes away!!!!

That should be investigated, and lead to impeachment if found to be true.
Chief Justice John Roberts also wants to maintain the independence and respect of the judiciary, an increasingly fraught proposition in an era when the Democrats threaten to stack the Court or worse if (realistically, when) they get power. So, throwing the liberals a narrow win in an important case from time to time preemptively stymies and distracts potential forthcoming attacks on the Court and ultimately helps conservatives.
