After some Atlanta police officers call out, mayor asks them to honor commitment to community

Atlanta (CNN)Hours after a fired police officer was charged with felony murder for fatally shooting a man in the back, Atlanta police officers are not responding to calls in three of the department's six zones, multiple sources within the Atlanta Police Department told CNN on Wednesday evening. Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard earlier in the day announced 11 charges against Garrett Rolfe, who was fired after he shot Rayshard Brooks twice in the back on Friday night. A third shot hit a car with three people inside.

The police department said an unusual number of officers working the late shift had called out sick. The mayor said the city would be OK. "There's a lot happening in our cities and our police officers are receiving the brunt of it, quite frankly," Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms told CNN's Chris Cuomo. She said the city has committed to the officers through a big pay raise, and "we expect that our officers will keep their commitment to our communities."

She said she thinks morale is down tenfold.

And you just know that if they let the perp go that eventually something happens to someone with the taser. And then the cop would be charged for not preventing the perp from getting away with it.

The police should refuse to come back to the job until the charges against the officer are downgraded, especially now that it’s been proven that this corrupt DA has charged police as using a deadly weapon when using a taser.

The perp was doing alright until test showed too drunk to drive. The cops had to take him in custody. He turned hostile when the cuffs came out. I assume it is SOP to cuff anyone before putting them in a patrol car. He overwhelmed the two cops, got one of their tasers and ran. In the chase he tried to use the taser. If he hit he could have got the cops gun and killed him. There would then be an armed fugitive loose on the public. The cop had to take him out. He could not wait for the perp repeat the process. His two shots removed the threat. Much will be made of the fact that those shots were to the back. In my opinion, the cop was justified hero.

The corrupt DA who is bringing murder charges against the cop should be thrown of office for abuse of power.

Howard is under investigation over a quarter of a million dollars that was supposed to go toward crime prevention programs but instead went mostly toward his own pay. Two of his deputies went up against him to try to get rid of him. The female candidates got the most votes. Howard has been the recipient of pac money linked to actblue, Fani Willis seems to be running on the cheap.

You should consider the fact that Chauvin and Floyd worked together as club bouncers, and had bad blood, according to reports.

when supposed leadership turns their backs on employees doing a difficult job this is what you get. It's poor leadership, incompetent people are in these positions.

In the hands of an untrained person a taser can be deadly.

According to DA Paul Howard a not long ago, an attack with a taser counts as an attack with a deadly weapon or with an object, device, or instrument which, when used offensively against a person, is likely to or actually does result in serious bodily injury.

Attorney says DA rushed to charge officers involved in Tasing of college students

ATLANTA — The attorney for two Atlanta police officers charged with aggravated assault says the district attorney’s contention that the officers’ use of a Taser amounted to assault would turn law enforcement on its ear.

The city fired officers Mark Gardner and Ivory Streeter the day after the incident in which two young people were shocked with a Taser and pulled from their car downtown.

District Attorney Paul Howard issued arrest warrants for Gardner, Streeter and four other officers. In total, four of them were charged with aggravated assault, a serious felony.

Aggravated assault in Georgia is described as assault “with a deadly weapon or with any object, device, or instrument which, when used offensively against a person, is likely to or actually does result in serious bodily injury.”

They need more than a pay raise.

How about actually SUPPORTING those officers instead of stabbing them in the back for doing the job they were trained to do?

No grand jury , no investigation , no notification to the GBI. They just went ahead with a press conference and convicted the cops.

Now all the cops should call in sick for a week.

I would leave if I worked on that force. They charged him with a capital crime. When the suspect turned and pointed the weapon towards them, the whole situation changed. Don’t think they will be able to convict him on that charge. Only delaying the riots until later.

Major Lance Bottoms...really? Sounds like 80s gay porn.

Then again Mayor Bowser of DC is just another dog.

Do the dems seek out folk with odd names?

Yeah I've considered that. Chauvin may well be a murderer and he may well have used excessive force - within the bounds of procedures but outside the bounds of human ethics. But there is not near proof of either yet. To call him legally a 'murderer' at this point is a serious accusation without all the evidence and speaks of a thought process unencumbered by a requirement to be patient and thorough before throwing 'murder' out there.

He may have had zero intent to murder. And he MAY have. But in this country - 'may this' and 'may that' and 'probably this' and 'sure-likes-like that' doesn't amount to calling someone a murderer. That's kind of a ... lefty ... thing to do.

Better yet, put a pistol in your mouth and pull the trigger to resign.

It wasn’t murder. But it probably was voluntary manslaughter.
