Right, we are told the mask is to protect others. If so, then only a surgical mask will do; it does not filter inhaled viruses, only exhaled.
The N95 mask will protect the wearer, but no one else. It’s designed for contaminated environments; therefore it does not filter exhalant.
The “fashion” masks are psychological comforts only.

100% CORRECT. - I once attended the USAMEDDAC’s Infection Control course in USAREUR & we were told that a “standard surgical mask (the sort that us “non-medical folks” can buy in 2020) were COMPLETELY WORTHLESS against viruses & SOME percentage of bacteria.”
Folks, the requirement to wear an ordinary scarf/painters/surgical mask or other similar covering for the mouth & nose is what we GIs call “EYEWASH”, i.e., something USELESS that we do to FOOL the unknowing sort of folks into thinking that we are “doing something”, even if we (and the smarter members of society) know that what we are doing is utterly FOOLISH & SILLY, in the extreme.
(To quote COL Paul A. T__________, MD & PhD who was our major instructor, “A whole tribe of viruses could march in a battalion-sized skirmish line through any portion of our regular cloth & plastic masks, without difficulty.”)
