Madison man whose arrest sparked night of violence in capital city is charged with extortion by feds

MADISON - Federal prosecutors brought extortion charges Friday against the man whose arrest this week sparked violence and destruction in the capital city.

U.S. Attorney Scott Blader filed the charges against Devonere Johnson, alleging he threatened to bash windows of downtown businesses unless employees gave him money.

Blader also alleges Johnson, 28, threatened to "shut down and destroy" another business unless Johnson and his friends were provided free food and drinks.

In one restaurant, Johnson allegedly brought a boombox indoors and refused to turn it down. When the owner told Johnson he donated money to a group supporting the Black Lives Matter campaign, Johnson asked what he had done "locally."

Ultimately, Johnson allegedly told the owner "give me money or we'll break windows," according to the criminal complaint.

Johnson entered another bar and allegedly asked for free food and drinks or else the bar would be "marked," according to the complaint.

"You don't want 600 people to come here and destroy your business and burn it down. The cops are on our side," according to the complaint, which included interviews with the bar owner about what Johnson allegedly said. "You notice that when you call them, nothing happens to us."

Blader said Johnson sought to extort the business owners by taking advantage of protests and unrest following the death of George Floyd.

"Those who attempt to take advantage of recent events to extort local businesses under the guise of community activism will be vigorously prosecuted," Blader said in a statement.

"All citizens have a right to feel safe within their communities. Extortion is not activism, it is a crime and it will not be tolerated," he said.

She caught him coming out and she was going to hold him at gunpoint for the police but he rushed her.

I remember the Corrina Mehiel case, but not the David Ruenzel one.

I'm reminded of a murder quite some time ago (late '80s or early '90s) that happened in NYC. The victim was the adult son of an extremely wealthy family (billionaire-level). He had become a teacher, and chose to work in a very poor school district somewhere in the city.

He sometimes invited teenagers to his apartment (perhaps there was something more than teaching going on there). Eventually, he was murdered in his apartment by IIRC two of his guests.

The quote about liberals and how "their narcissism in part functions to blind them to inconvenient realities" is excellent.

Much of this was anticipated by a character in a book I loved as a teenager, called Red Sky At Morning, by a little-known author named Richard Bradford. It takes place in New Mexico. One of its colorful characters is an aging, wealthy woman who is the unabashed champion of Native Americans (Indians). This woman has a one-track mind, all she thinks about is the "red people" and how virtuous and selfless and authentic they are. She tries to actually become a Native American herself. The actual Native Americans who live in the town think she's a joke, and laugh at her behind her back.

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton made a lot of money with the blessing of the DOJ doing far more than this guy did.

This is the jerk in the video I saw where he followed, and harassed two white guys down the street and into the restaurant, all the while talking on his megaphone, and carrying a bat. Good. I’m glad they arrested the little punk. He needs to have that baseball bat shoved up his arse sideways.

"Don't have the high school graduation photo yet."

He was just trying to get his life turned around...working on his GED, and wanted to be a community agitator once he got it.

"You notice that when you call them, nothing happens to us.”

Yes, Americans in NY City, Minneapolis, LA, Seattle, Portland and many other places have all noticed this.

Devonere A. Johnson, age 28, whose arrest Tuesday sparked the riots that injured State Sen. Tim Carpenter, firebombed the police chief’s office in the City County Building, toppled two statues on the Capitol grounds, and broke windows in the Capitol and elsewhere.

Devonere (with the street name “Jeshua Musa” wielded a baseball bat. The federal complaint says that on Monday 06-22-2020, Johnson and another man were inside the business blasting music from a boom box. The complaint states Johnson said to the owner, “Give me money or we’ll break windows” and then added “Venmo me money.”

At one business Johnson declared, “I can do whatever I want, we got [another business] shut down and we’ll do the same to you,”
